This may be a very unpopular opinion

But I love the TNG episode "The Royale". It is very bad and cheesy but I love it, it is one of my favorites of the series. I love Vegas and casinos and maybe that is why I enjoy it so. Does anyone else like it or is it pretty universally panned?

Would Data be allowed to gamble in Quark's Bar?

I had just been watching TNG "Time's Arrow, Part I" where we see Data raise funds in 1893 by playing Poker and beating card sharks (Possibly through cheating or by just knowing the odds) which earns him what we can assume is a considerable sum of money in those days as he has a wad of cash.
From what we see over the series of their poker sessions Data picked up the game of Poker quite easily and although he wasn't prepared for Riker bluffing him in TNG "The Measure of a Man" he seems to learn from the experience and doesn't fall for any 'slight of hand' card tricks like the one Riker tried to play on him in TNG "Legacy" so it's clear he has a more than reasonable grasp on card games and in the episode TNG "The Royale" we see Data play various other gambling games such as Twenty-One where he is asked if he was "counting cards" by Tex and later on he plays Craps (which he explains as "It is all a question of probabilities") and notices that the dice he is given are improperly balanced (most likely on purpose by the casino) and reweighs them in his hand most likely using his extreme strength and precision and ends up winning more than $12.5 Million, granted they needed to do this to escape but it's proof that Data is capable.
I'm sure these events weren't well known outside of the Enterprise crew but would Quark trust Commander Data, being an incredibly advanced android, to gamble as he could effectively bleed Quarks "house" dry if he wanted to or would his 'ethical subroutine' prevent him from doing so? Considering Quark is pretty unethical himself when it comes to gambling (Take the Dabo Wheel magnetic device in DS9 "Move Along Home" that causes all sorts of problems) would Data also consider it ethical to fix 'unbalanced dice' to give him or others a fair chance at winning? I'm sure Data could easily win at Darts with Chief O'Brien for instance with Datas hand-to-eye coordination on point. And in the episode DS9 "Change of Heart" when O'Brien tried to get Bashir with his genetic enhancements to beat Quark, Quark played on his emotional feelings for Jadzia to distract him whereas with Data that would never have worked so I wonder if Quark would have let Data play in O'Briens place had he been there.
(I have no experience with gambling or casinos so I apologise if I've under or overestimated the amount of luck vs probabilities that goes into winning)

The unsolved mystery of "The Royale"

TNG 2x12
The Enterprise investigates the wreckage of a 21st century Earth spaceship orbiting a distant planet and the appearance of a casino with inhabitants based on a rather poorly written paperback novel.
Either there are more episodes like this or I'm crazy, but I find the planet of Theta VIII the most interesting in all of Star Trek and that the "The Royale" is an extremely interesting and complex episode that asks questions without answering them. I kind of think this planet episode is similar to Tom Bombadil, only in the way that everything that happens is so strange and slightly "lore" breaking. But I guess everything can be justified.
The things I find strange about this episode is: * They never solved what was going on at the Hotel Royale.
  • Geordi says Theta 116 has a surface temp of -291 °C; less than absolute zero.
  • Also planet's age is estimated to be 72 billion earth years old; far older than the universe itself.
  • The NASA ship is much farther away from earth than it should be.
  • The NASA ship was destroyed by particle weapons.
  • Also the whole planet surface is very interesting.
In addition to all the strange things that happen on the planet's surface this planet breaks two universal laws. And how could this have happened? A mistake while writing the episode? shhh no.. These things make the already interesting planet even more interesting. It possibly have something to do with the Q.
This episode is great because it raises questions that can be speculated at from angles because they never answer anything. Any thoughts / speculation?
  • Why did the NASA astronaut bring the book "Hotel Royale" with him if it was so bad?

Nemesis missed an opportunity within its own story.

The film as it is, is one of my least favourite films. I dislike the directors attempt to soft-reboot the TNG films into what he hoped to be a trilogy of new films. From what i read, many of the cast disliked Stuart Baird for being so blind to alot of the existing elements of TNG. I truthfully direct all of my dislike of this film at Baird. While he is no doubt a masterful editor (see: Casino Royale), i will always believe he was a god-awful choice to direct a film that is part of an endearing franchise.
Personally, I believe the film needed a single element and that would have intertwined throughout the film. This element would have given a suitable sidestory that would have appeased fans and the best part is, it could have even been simply introduced with a few lines of speech. Existing scenes would have held it up perfectly with a few light edits. Utterly changing the meaning of specific scenes in the film.
The element? The Scimitar is a Farpoint alien.
Now as soon as I mention this, the instant image of a floaty colossal jellyfish in a 2002 Hollywood film fills you with dread, as it does with I, BUT, its natural form did'nt actually need to be seen on screen.
The greatest thing about this is the scale which this element could be used. It could have been kept vague: So it is not relevant to regular cinema-goers but Trek fans will pick up on the connection. Or it could have been a significant side-story as each character eventually pieces together the evidence that this is indeed a Farpoint alien.
On Memory Alpha, the original outline for the Farpoint alien in "Encounter at Farpoint" was: An orbital gun platform built around a captured being. The alien's captors intended to use the platform to forward their dreams of expansion, meanwhile feeding the central entity sufficient quantities of the mineral balmine to keep it alive.
Now, keeping that in mind. Suddenly many scenes, sequences and plot points from the film can help explain the existence of the alien.
Finally, the inclusion of the Farpoint alien would help create a sufficient marker that TNG had come full circle. Making the film a slightly more satisfying conclusion.
TLDR; Scimitar should have been a Farpoint alien.

Watching "The Royale" again, I realized it's Groundhog Day gone wrong

Like Phil Connors, Colonel Stephen Richey was trapped in a looped reality with no apparent control over it. Both were subjected to the same experiences over and over. But I think it's pretty clear that Col. Richey got the short end of the stick compared to Phil.
Phil enjoyed a kind of immortality, knowing that even if he kills himself, he will awaken at 6:00am on February 2nd, right in his bed, with full memory of all his past experiences. Col. Richey got no such immortality, dying after decades of imprisonment. If he did kill himself and get revived, he made no mention of it in his diary entry. So filling his time with crazy and dangerous stunts is out, it seems.
Phil had a town full of real people to interact with. Sure, after hundreds and thousands of repetitions, he knew them all pretty well but at least they had personalities to learn about at all. In "The Royale," we see indications that anyone who wasn't specifically written about (like Mickey D, the bell hop, the hotel manager were) has no personality whatsoever, totally ignoring the away team. Data says that they are neither lifeforms nor machines, and have no DNA. It's unclear what sort of interactions Col. Richey might have had with them. Can he have any kind of real conversation with them? Have sex with one? Kill one? I know, that escalated quickly, but the fact is he was trapped and, despite appearances, alone. However they're made, these beings do seem to be automatons who exist solely for his benefit. I think it would be understandable that after a few years, he would have tried to push some boundaries.
And jeez, even the ones with "personalities" were annoying as hell after even ONE playthrough of the story! At least there were some well-meaning and genuine people in Punxsatawney. And Phil could go outside, see the sun in the sky, sit in a park. Col. Richey was trapped in the drab, uninspired interior of a run down casino hotel. Bleurgh.
And there was no "moral" of Col. Richey's story. It was just plain bad luck. The aliens weren't trying to turn him into a better person, they just felt so guilty about killing his friends that they felt the need to keep him alive. Sure, Col. Richey says he doesn't hold any animosity against them, and living in the Royale was apparently preferable to death, so it wasn't the worst torture imaginable. But 38 years in there...
So what would you have done? I think a lot of us have probably wondered what we'd do in Phil Connors' shoes, but I have a harder time explaining how I would have survived in the Royale as Col. Richey did.
meta: I've always liked "The Royale," which I guess is a minority view point since I've seen it on some "worst of" lists. I think it's one of the few times TNG appropriated the TOS formula and actually pulled it off. You can almost see the Kirk, Spock, and McCoy mechanic at work in the Riker, Data, and Worf away team. I think it's also one of better TNG episodes that doesn't try to get some big moral point across. Just fun, old style sci-fi mystery.

List of Most Memorable Episodes of Star Trek: the Next Generation

Although TNG is one of the most enjoyable shows ever watched, its quality is not uniform, and only its most devoted fans will not find it a chore to get through all 178 episodes. Nora's rule of reruns: for any show that you've only seen one episode of, that's the only episode you'll ever see, even in reruns.

I have noticed that whenever there is a show that I don't regularly watch (Star Trek TNG for example), I will end up seeing an episode sooner or later (Casino Royale). The thing is, that's the only episode I'll ever end up seeing, whenever flipping through cable channels, or having a friend recommend an episode. (Note: now that it's on netflix, I intend to fix the TNG problem).

[Trade]Unopened City of Angels DVD (+ a Stargate DVD)

Ok so I moved in with the bf shortly after I bought my copy of City of Angels, and so it was never opened. Photo here
There is also an opened Stargate DVD available (same photo).
I don't really consider myself a collector, so here's a small list of suggestions, but I'd also consider some others if you want to make any offers (Action, Spy movies, Sci Fi, etc.)

It was pretty long, but it wasn't weighed down by all the travelogue footage and other types of padding seen in other Bond films (ooh! let's watch 20 minutes of scuba divers pushing around nuclear missiles!). Inside they find an alien representation of a 20th-century casino hotel as based on a "second-rate novel" owned by the NASA astronaut that had survived, and used as a template by aliens to build him an oasis in the middle of a barren, unlivable environment. It makes for a classic TNG Pointless Period Piece. The first sentence of the novel was, "It was a dark and stormy night," and the episode ... Data's gambling in the casino is similar to another script written by Roddenberry. In The Questor Tapes, the android discovers that the dice are counterfeit and changes the balance in order to win the game. When Riker, Worf and Data materialize in front of a revolving door that leads them into the casino of the Hotel Royale, their communication with the U.S.S. Enterprise is suddenly cut off. The away team is trapped by the revolving door, which continually leads back into the casino lobby, full of employees and patrons showing no signs of life.
