So a couple of years ago my little sister and I developed a list of the best cult films ever. Originally we were playing along with the AV Club's New Cult Canon, but as we got deeper into cult cinema we found lists of more and more movies.
So after a couple years, our master list was finally compiled from several other lists, namely, EW's 100 Best Cult Films, EW's addendum of 11 overlooked cult films, the AV Club's New Cult Canon and Old Cult Canon, Criterion's list, Cinestrike's list in response to the EW list, all of Danny Peary's books, and, finally, Xavier Mendik and Ernest Mathijs's book. Obviously there was quite a bit of overlap. It comes out to like 500 movies. We've got about 220 in the bag.
Frankly, neither of us really give a shit if the list is too long or if some of these movies may or may not count as cult films in the minds of some. We trusted experts (of sorts) for the list and have been really pleased to have so many quirky, bizarre, disturbing, and obscure films to choose from.
Having researched this so much, and watched so many goddamned movies, my little sister and I would love to choose the final 50 cult films ourselves, rounding out the list to 550. We've got some ideas that appear nowhere on our list (Flesh Gordon, Caligula, etc.) but we'd love some input. So, dear cult cinephiles, what else should we watch that's not on the list?
