Alright, it's that time of year again, soon it will be 2017. So this year I've decided to create a short list of the things I miss most about SA, having now lived abroad for over a decade.

Always having an extra dimension in such a diverse country. You might be Ice Skating in Benoni and think fuck it, I think I'll drive to Mpumalanga to see Gods Window. You might be fedup with the city life in Cape Town and go to Crystal Pools. And if you don't feel like nature - Not a problem. It's just so Diverse, hard to be bored in SA.
Dutchmen - Yeah you know the traditional salt of the earth type. Trust me you miss them when they're gone.
Biltong and the real stuff. Not the shit you get vacuumed packed - which reminds me this year I need to learn how to make Biltong.
Nibble sticks, and bubbles.
Customer service.
Steak ranches - even the Spur. A goodie burger with that white sauce.
Those frozen guava drinks in a packet you had in school, 20c for one. You would bite off a corner. No idea what they were called.
The Shack in CT.
FTV parties in Camps Bay.
The Dolls House in JHB. Best damn drive in restaurant ever.
Drive ins. Did you know some countries never had these???
Duncan docks before it was the VNA.
Surfing in Port Edward. Skipping school and going surfing.
Actually seeing snakes on walks.
Mediclinic. 24/7 doctors.
Teller 1 cards. Didn't save shit, but way cooler than Post Office books.
Oumas stamps.
Die Traans Karoo - Yup been on that one too.
Cradle of mankind. If you haven't been there - what you waiting for.
Pretoria, back when it was safe to walk around. Playing pool in Sunnyside.
Stellenbosch - meeting Valiant Swart at die Akker.
Every house has a swimming pool - almost. So swimming before school in winter.
Playing cricket after school with a tennis ball, a field and any kids who wanted in.

Sasolburg and Secunda - life in oil and coal towns

Greetings to all of /southafrica!
Google Maps is a godsend for bored people, but sometimes you stumble on things that open up a few questions. While checking out satellite imagery of South Africa, Sasolburg caught my attention by being named after an energy company. Turns out it also has an aptly-named partner in Mpumalanga!
Perhaps someone here has lived there and can tell what there's to do besides working for Sasol? Have people settled there or are they "work for a few years and get out" places? Both towns were founded fairly recently and seem to have been developed, if not from scratch, from not that much, since. Industrial towns usually seem to have quite a few entertainment options, but all I can find about Sasolburg is some top-notch sports facilities and Secunda has… well, a giant casino.
Sasolburg is in close proximity to Vanderbiljpark (also founded pretty late) and Vereeniging, both of them apparently industrial. Secunda isn't next to anything, which seems to make for some kind of community spirit as the "I lived in Secunda and survived it" Facebook group shows.
Bottom line: what's life like in places like these (and are there any stereotypes attached to them)? I initially learned about the existence of Secunda due to a few artists I follow on Twitter playing gigs there and was surprised to see how big the place was, so it seems to be a spot on some musicians' tours. Oil/coal towns aren't unique to South Africa, but we don't really have those at home so have to start asking somewhere.
