The more information we have, the better off we will be. We all know that tables can change rapidly. I saw a table go from 25 to 15 to 100 at the Flamingo in the course of a few hours. I'll try to keep the mins what is reported the most and add other information in the comments like "found this table at $5 on graveyard shift" so people konw that isn't the norm These tables can be a pain to maintain, so please provide as much information as possible. Confirmed info: One shooter , 64 year old man , shot from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay into the festival. He then turned the gun on himself after 10-15 minutes of shooting. He has 8-10+ rifles in the room with him. Man is from Mesquite (not Las Vegas) , Nevada , and is said to have operated alone. The alleged man with a rifle walking in the Bellagio employee entrance was CONFIRMED TRUE, it was a good Samaritan, trying to help, in the least helpful way. The man just had his guns on him , and took of to try and save lives. The thoughts were right, the process was not. Reports of gunfire from anywhere BUT the Mandalay Bay are false, all shots originated from the Mandalay. Again: Shooter acted alone, and it is believed his girlfriend was not involved. As of right now, 9:39am the casualties are 58 people killed, and 500+ injured, in the deadliest Mass Shooting in American history. There are plenty of videos of the gunfire, before during and after, however I do not feel the need to keep linking them here. Thank you everyone for your thoughts, prayers and compliments. I do not see myself a hero im just a 19 year old kid he needed his sister alive and home, though there were many REAL heroes on the strip last night, people assisting in loading the injured to hospitals, officers and LVMPD and LVPD came together to neutralize any threats, and save as many people as we could. One girl was shot in the leg . Dropped the 4 girls off with a friend of theirs at the airport, drove to fire station 19 and dropped his aunt with his uncle there. The map takes inspiration from spec ops the line where las vegas were destroyed by massive Sandstrom. Due to the zombie apocalypse, there is no cleanup effort and roads and buildings remain cover in the sand. The player has to keep cool or risk dying on thirst or heat stroke due to the heat. During the night it becomes cold and you must seak heat to survive. Sandstorms are somewhat frequent and come in destroy or damage player structures(also deals damage to players and unprotected vehicles). Animals are scarce and so is water, it rarely rains, and most lakes have dried up due to being covered in sand. A new item is a water drill that builds up water over a somewhat slow time. Area 51 is a dead zone due to a nuclear explosion(caused by the government to protect the secrets) where all high tier loot is. There are no farms and you must use grow beds to grow crops which are rare spawns in plant stores. There are military convoys where you can find scattered on what remains of roads. Nellis AFB is the local HQ of the Collation they give you various quests doing with aiding the locals. Bellagio is HQ for a looter faction. Scatter through the map are various survivor camps that you can trade with. In Los Vegas casinos you can find casino coins that can be used on casino slot machines for the rare money payout but must be powered. A new enemy is a raider, which roams in by themself or up to groups 5, they carry various weapons and are hostile to the player. Killing them drops weapons, food, water medicine. Also, Collation and Looter have riders which by killing them affect your standing with them. from friendly to shoot on sight(Only affects raiders) however these guys have better loot than the normal raider. In 1968, Deloris Wilson is a young Catholic school student. In 1992, the adult Deloris is a lounge singer in Reno, Nevada, performing as “Deloris Van Cartier”. After Deloris witnesses her gangster boyfriend Vince LaRocca execute an informant, police lieutenant Eddie Souther places her in witness protection. She is brought to Saint Katherine's Parish, a convent in a run-down San Francisco neighbourhood. The Reverend Mother reluctantly agrees to shelter Deloris, as the police will pay the failing convent. Disguised as “Sister Mary Clarence”, Deloris struggles with convent life, and sneaks out to a bar, followed by nuns Mary Patrick and Mary Robert. They are caught, and the Reverend Mother forces Deloris to join the convent choir. With her singing experience, Deloris transforms the struggling choir. At Sunday Mass, Deloris leads the much-improved choir in a traditional performance of "Hail Holy Queen", before shifting into a gospel and rock-and-roll interpretation. Although the Reverend Mother is infuriated, Monsignor O'Hara congratulates the choir's unorthodox performance for attracting people to the service. Convinced by Deloris, he allows the nuns to clean up the church and the neighbourhood. The choir continues to amaze parishioners and visitors with a rendition of "My Guy" – rewritten as "My God" – and the nuns attract media attention for revitalizing the neighbourhood. Souther chastises Deloris for nearly being exposed on national television, as Vince has placed a bounty on her head. O'Hara informs the convent that Pope John Paul II, having heard of the choir’s success, will visit the church himself. Deloris tells the Reverend Mother that Vince’s upcoming trial means she will soon leave, and the Reverend Mother reveals she has resigned, believing she is no longer of use to the convent. Souther discovers a corrupt detective in his own department has given Deloris’ location to Vince, and rushes to San Francisco to warn Deloris, but she is kidnapped by Vince’s men. The Reverend Mother reveals Deloris’ identity to the nuns, and they decide to go after her, guilting a helicopter pilot into flying them to Reno. There, Vince orders his men to kill Deloris, but they are reluctant to shoot her while she is dressed as a nun. Arriving at Vince's casino, the nuns find Deloris after she escapes from Vince’s men. They become trapped in the casino lounge, and Deloris prepares to sacrifice herself. Before Vince can shoot her, Souther arrives and arrests Vince and his men. Thanking Deloris for what she has done, the Reverend Mother decides to remain at the convent. Returning to San Francisco, the choir, led by Deloris, sing "I Will Follow Him" to a packed audience in Saint Katherine's, receiving a standing ovation from all, including the Pope.
The year is 2016, Alex Turner has returned home from 30th birthday celebrations to discover a brand-new Steinway Vetregrand piano. It was a gift from his manager, and it opened a whole new world for him. “Looking back now it seems really... significant. It changed everything really.” He states about it within an interview from Mojo Magazine. He was correct. The piano sparked everything to life becoming the “centre of the universe” for the album. Guitars were just not giving him ideas anymore, but the piano was. Stored in a spare bedroom within his LA home, this became “The Lunar Surface” his almost makeshift recording studio. The name coming from the theory that Stanley Kubrick faked the moon landing. Alex even stating to Radio X that, “It was amusing to say, “I’m going down to the Lunar Surface.”” The makeshift studio also helped shape the album title, it was “instrumental” to the process. But the piano wasn’t the only thing within the makeshift studio. There was a drum kit, a Vox Continental organ, and a Tascam 388 eight-track recorder. The eight-track recorder would serve as a substantial part in making the album. “I sat with all my instruments and recorded the songs into the machine. That way, I could hear everything at once, whereas in the past it was all in my imagination until I could play the songs with the band.” He also considered it “a writing tool” as much as a recording tool. Working in isolation, he recorded tapes that would later remain on the record in forms of elements such as vocals and various instrumental parts. The eight-track even served as part of the album cover with the “lobby model” of the Hotel + Casino sitting overtop of it, with an earlier version of the record as the tape on it. The model itself was constructed by Turner. The model itself was birthed from the album title and the fact that this is the 6th Arctic Monkeys album. Thus, explaining the hexagon imagery, 1 side per album. The model first started as cardboard, left over scraps from this model can be seen in a photo from inside the Lunar Surface shot by Zackery Michael. Then it was built more and more until we arrived at the model showcased on the album’s cover. The model has a rotating sign bit that was inspired by the House of Pies rotating sign.
VOX, LA FRETTE, & BRINGING IT TOGETHER (Enter the Others)
Upon assembling some of the track, Alex took them to fellow bandmate, guitarist Jamie Cook. Jamie is considered the “gatekeeper” to band, almost like the human bullshit meter. Alex almost feared that he would underwhelmed with it. But Jamie was the one told Alex, “This is definitely what we should be doing.” This led to the pair adding guitar parts to the songs. The majority of these, like the demo tape vocals, stuck with the album. From here they took the album to Vox Recording Studios on Melrose Ave. in LA, in May 2017. This is where the first full band sessions were recorded. Some of the “more interesting” keyboard sounds within the album came from these sessions. But this did not really work out for the band. So, later in September, the band went to La Frette Studios, a residential recording studio on the outskirts of Paris. This was where the album really came together. The band spent about 5-6 weeks recording here. This was Jamie’s idea. La Frette ended up seeing the band bring in an extra 9 musicians to play with them. This also led to a ‘Pet Sounds’ style of recording. This was a large ensemble recording style with these multiple musicians and the band themselves on multiple different instruments including multiple of the same type. So, 2 drum kits, 3 guitars, a couple of pianos. This did not work for every track but did work for a few. (Specifically, The Ultracheese, but I will talk about this more later) Alex stated to BBC Radio 1 that, “A lot of the energy I feel like came from that session. It was all like together in La Frette.” Some of the La Frette sessions can be seen in the Warp Speed Chic short film shot by Ben Chappell.
THE ALBUM (Natural Progression and Influences)
The album overall is 11 tracks. Many believe that the album is a concept album revolving around the Hotel + Casino, but that is not the case. Each one is a “short story” in the words of Turner. Four Out Of Five and the title tracking being the most connected of the collection. "But in other ways it does seem like a collection of short stories and we named the collection after one of the stories which is this one [Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino]. The other ones belong in the same place as this." (Radio X Track by Track interview). The title of the album itself came from a variety of things. The two most prominent being: the fact it is a “place”, and the location of the Apollo 11 moon landing. One thing should be known about the idea of the hotel and casino being a place, Turner loves to think of albums of places. “I think of some of my favorite records as places that you can go and stay for a while, and sort of spurred me on to give this record the name of a place.” (iHeart) The other part of the name itself coming from the Apollo 11 landing may be considered more interesting. This is due to the fact it may have come from cups themed with the lunar landing. The title of course is not the only interesting thing about the album. The sound itself is a departure from their last, AM. But the band all feel like this was natural progression. But the AM era was where they felt they had went a little too far. Bassist Nick O’Malley told Mojo Magazine that he felt that they had lost the “realness” in a sense with that era. “I think we'd gone as far as we could go. I had these crazy ‘80s hair metal leggings on-stag. I'd worn ‘em on Halloween, which I'd done dressed as Macho Man Randy Savage, the WWF wrestler. That was a big sign that it was time to have a break.” And with that they took a break, a five year long one. Turner himself was also aware that he could not do what he did on AM again, “I was aware of the idea that, I don’t think I could have been singing about the things I was singing about on AM anymore.” (Studio Brussels) This was not the first time the band has faced this “challenge” of switching it up. The same thing had happened with their 3rd album Humbug. Drummer Matt Helders states, “We’ve had that challenge before, after the first album success where we had to just get on and make the second, or else forever be dwelling on it. But this one didn’t feel like that. I mean, maybe there’ll be fans we gained from AM that will be a bit confused now. Like, that was their first experience of the band... ‘and now they’re going this?’” (Mojo Magazine) But the band did not want to make AM 2.0. Guitarist Jamie Cook stated to Mojo Magazine, “If we were worried about that we would never have made Humbug. And to disappear for a couple of years then come back with AM2? I think people have been, ‘Fuck off.’” But of course, this move was not met without criticism. Many fans and critics found themselves in a state of “What the fuck happened to Arctic Monkeys?” upon their new era and album due to the departure of sound from AM. But Turner himself does not see this a full-fledged departure, “There’s an idea that this album’s radically removed from where we’ve been. I can sort of see that, but I don’t think it’s as much of a move as people suggest.” (LA Times) The album takes multiple film influences, science fiction influences, and musical influences from film scores to help make these “short stories”. Science Fiction inspired Turner to explore other worlds to create the album. Worlds he made up as he went along. Three films from Jean-Pierre Melville served as main influences on the album. The films being Un Flic, Le Cercle Rouge, and Le Samouraï. The films mostly center around a jazz club. The set interiors of these films piqued Turner’s interest. “So, when I would sit at the piano and play these types of chords, I was thinking about those Melville interiors a lot.” (Pitchfork) Overall, the sci-fi influenced led to Turner accessing sort of a “vocabulary” to say, that helped paint this picture of this hotel and casino on the moon. The album also has this “magic” that they just could not get upon other recording sessions. This led to many of the demo tapes and early session elements making it to the file cut. They wanted to make an intimate experience but just could not get it to be as intimate as some of the early recording. The album itself is also “autobiographical” in a sense. Turner sees it as him talking to himself all throughout the 11 tracks. But this wasn’t his first time trying to write things towards himself. “I tried to write this kind of thing before, I just didn’t know how to, really. I think I tried and recognized, thankfully, that I wasn’t ready. It's like the natural place to have gone, after that first record, was somewhere around ‘ere.”
THE TRACKS
STAR TREATMENT Opening the album, we have Star Treatment, an almost 6-minute-long track. The track itself beings with the line “I just wanted to be one of The Strokes.” A polarizing opening line for a polarizing album. This lyric was originally meant to be replaced, but Turner kept it in. He was using the “Scrambled Eggs” method for the album. The “Scrambled Eggs” method comes from Paul McCartney where he used “scrambled eggs” as temporary lyrics while writing The Beatles’ song ‘Yesterday’. This just happened to be one of those lines. But he took a liking to it the more time went on. The Strokes of course were a big influence on the band, they were even coined “The British Strokes” upon debut. But truth is, time has passed since then. About 12 years to be exact. “But when I circled back around to it I felt like it was right where it ought to be because of how it makes me think, “Shit. The last 12 years just flashed by.” There’s an honesty and a truth to it.” (Pitchfork) The passage of time is a constant theme within this track, with references to the ‘70s, the ‘80s. This track was the first thing Turner had written for the album. It came about during the last run of The Last Shadow Puppets (Turner’s side-project with Miles Kane). But this is also the most direct Turner was with himself on the album. Specifically, about songwriting. Lines like “The golden boy’s in bad shape,” refer to the fact he was lost with his songwriting and did not know where to go. But like how the track had started before the album itself had started, there’s a particular line that had existed since 2009. “Here ain’t no place for dolls like you and me,” That was the line. He had tried giving it away to others to put in a track, but no one would take it. So, he saved it because he didn’t have “follow up” per say yet but found it within this track. Another focal point for the track is the lounge singer and his backing band. This lounge singer theme can be seen through, but this is where it starts. This is where the lounge singer gets the name for his band. “I think I like the idea that there would be a longue singer sat at a bar, overhearing somebody being cut off from having another martini and hearing them say “Who are you to cut me off? The martini police?” and then this lounge singer thinking “That would be a good name for my backing band.”” (Radio X) But this track serving as the opening track overall sets a tone for the album. Upon sharing the music with others, they decided this would be the best place to start the album, a way to get people to hear it first and foremost. The other way to do this would have been releasing it as a single. But they took what can be seen a controversial move in this era of streaming and singles being more prominent than albums to release no singles. Like how this track led to Turner writing the rest of the album, it leads you, the listener, into the rest of the album. ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE One Point Perspective is the shortest track on the album, but it does pack quite a bit of a punch. With the title coming from a filming style, specifically one used a lot by Stanley Kubrick, a main influence on the album, we dig a bit more into the sci-fi roots. The track itself focuses on conversations, dreams, and how they are often interrupted. “It was informed perhaps by conversations I may have heard or been involved with. Under the influence of some narcotic draft or another. And fragments of those things are appearing the lyrics on this tune.” (Radio X) The track also focuses briefly on a made-up documentary called “Singsong ‘Round the Money Tree”. “I think specifically in the case of this documentary, there was something else there. And it came from the “If I’m gonna end up singing to a quiet room, like what comes before that.” Perhaps someone had told me they’d been singing along to a score or something.” (Radio X) Of course this brings us to the quiet rooms. What exactly are the quiet rooms? Well they’re exactly what they sound like, literal quiet rooms. But they also refer to isolation experienced by Turner while recording the album. With the vocal takes, especially the early tape ones, it would just be him, alone in the Lunar Surface with his eight-track. Of course, there’s also the line “Bear with me, man, I lost my train of thought.” This one is followed by a pause in the vocals and is usually played up for the live shows, but it represents that spot in a conversation where you really do lose your train of thought. Maybe it’s your mind wandering, maybe it’s that you are being interrupted and then trying to resume what you were talking about but forgot. But, it’s a universal feeling that ties together this track. AMERICAN SPORTS American Sports is an interesting track. Not just musically, but lyrically. Music wise an organ plays a main part in the track. The organ though was strangely organized upon recording. With Turner doing one bar, recording it, stopping, doing another bar. Eventually in later recording sessions they attempted to play it all together but just could not get the same effect/sound as the one from the eight-track tape, so they stuck with that. The vocals were also from the eight-track tape. Lyrical wise the track was pulled together by a line given to Turner from his grandfather. “I visited me Granddad one day and he said to me, ‘You know, I often think of phrases even there that I think you might be able to do something with.’ And I sort of went ‘All right.’ He likes to watch the horse-racing, and he began to tell me that whenever there’s what’s called a ‘steward’s inquiry,’- All you ever hear back after the steward’s inquiry is the phrase ‘the trainer's explanation was accepted by the steward.’ Which, as he said it I just thought was loaded.” (iHeart) This was what sparked the rest of the track. But there’s one question left, what the fuck is Lola? Well, a Lola is his writer’s block. Seen within the chorus with the line “And I never thought, not in a million years, that I’d meet so many Lolas.” He gives the writer’s block a bit of a personification. The track also gives us more callbacks to technology, another overlapping theme within the album. The narrator describes a video call with God, and a virtual reality mask stuck on ‘Parliament Brawl’. The parliament brawl also allows this track to get a little political. This can be seen heavily within the first line of the second verse, “Breaking news, they take the truth and make it fluid,” mostly referring to the phenomena of ‘Fake News’. Overall, the track makes for an interesting take combining writer’s block, political problems, and technology. TRANQUILITY BASE HOTEL + CASINO The title track serves as the fourth track to the album. Opening with imagery of Jesus in a day spa. But the track itself is built upon the idea of the character Mark. Mark of course is a character in the track who answers phones, mostly stating the name of the hotel and casino while asking where he can direct your call. First Turner pictured Mark at this phone, then he pictured where the phone was after that. This led of course to the album title, but it also leads back into the track itself. This of course is played off well in the video, but we’ll get to that in a bit. As the track builds you a bit more of this world of the hotel and casino on the moon, it also leads to some interesting lines. One in particular being “Kiss me underneath the moon’s sideboob.” Question of the year being, what the fuck is the moon’s sideboob? Well, the term was coined by guitarist Jamie Cook. “There was a really thin crescent moon in the sky, which Jamie from the band described as the moon's sideboob and I thought that was like quite profound.” (Studio Brussel) Another odd line within the track is “Technological advances really bloody get me in the mood”, this is a bit of a satire. But is also a slight observation. This observation being that technology sometimes changes society, especially when advances are made. These changes can be reflected in the way we talk to others, the way we act, and many other aspects of our life that we may not fully realize at first. For the record though, technological advances do not turn him on. Onto the video, this was the second single from the album, and the second video. The video was released on the 23rd of July. Directed by Ben Chappell and Aaron Brown, the video continues an overlapping Kubrick inspired theme. Unfortunately, Turner is the only one from the band who fully makes an appearance in the video. The others are briefly shown through footage from their BCC Maida Vale Studios session appearing on displays though out the “sets”. Throughout this video there’s sections where the track and video break a bit for some flashing red lights followed by some “doots” taking over the audio, like the Four Out of Five video. The video was filmed at the Peppermill Reno, a hotel and casino within Las Vegas, Nevada. The Peppermill Reno were nice enough to write a blog post about the video breaking down the locations of the video. The video took two days of film to shoot within the area. The first location they filmed at was the Fireside Longue. This is the first time Turner, playing out the character of Mark, is handed a phone. The phone was handed to him by a worker from the Café Milano within the hotel and casino. Two different suites are featured throughout the video. The first being the Safari Adventure Suite. This is home to many of the hot tub scenes. The other being the Roman Opulence suite, this was the all gold room. There’s also the elevator shots that came from the 17th floor elevators. The wandering around the hotel and casino shots, mostly shot within the cube bar and the island buffet. And some phone call answering with the Tuscany Tower’s courtesy phone. There’s one other particular phone scene within this video I decided to save for last due the fact that it is going to come up a bit later. The second phone call is answered within a replica of the 1966 Batmobile via the Batphone. This serves as a nice callback to one of the later tracks on the album titled, Batphone. During these shots he also is fake driving with a projected image of a tunnel in the background, this also comes up in the Four Out of Five video, but we’ll get into that on that track. GOLDEN TRUNKS Believe it or not this the “love song” on the album. Yeah. The track is described by Turner as being a conversation between him and an unnamed female character he is falling for. But that all gets overshadowed by the semi-titular line, “The leader of the free world, reminds you of a wrestler wearing tight golden trunks.” The line does steal the show for being out there in a sense. The beginning of the line is a bit cumbersome to say the least, but it is almost melodic in another sense via the delivery. But this overall is just another part of the conversation with this female character. It may even be part of her imagination, you know, something she’s saying. Almost giving us a retrospective into her thoughts, feelings, and sense of humor. This all leads towards the bridge of the track. “Bendable figures with a fresh new pack of lies, Summat else to publicise, I'm sure you've heard about enough.” Almost showing us how fast the conversation is moving along. But also showing that you get to a point where you don’t know what to believe in the conversation or really what to believe in the track. The bridge also brings another interesting point forward. The words in particular, ‘Bendable Figures’ was almost the track’s title. “Which was because, someone got me a toy Batmobile, and it came with bendable figures of Batman and Robin, I assume, among others possibly. I’ve made a bit of a name for me since, and I mean, I am a fan of the old Batman book. I remember looking at this box and on the box it said ‘bendable figures’ and I don’t know. The news might have been on in the background, and here we are.” (iHeart) Another interesting point of the track is how straight the narrator and this female character are with each other. They both are basically telling each other that they fantasize about each other. She says it by whispering in his ear, he says it by responding to her straightly. FOUR OUT OF FIVE Another track with an interesting open, this one was originally different lyric-wise. Originally the words were ‘Karaoke and raspberry beret, in imaginative ways, and I get signed right then and there by a hotshot executive / I wasn’t expecting it that easy.’ Quite a departure from the final version that appears on the track. Four Out of Five served as the first single to the album. The track describes a taqueria on the roof the Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino, and more particularly how it is boasting four stars out of five. Mostly just how perfect scores are unattainable so a four of five is great enough, “Because the people that are in charge of giving the scores, they never give a perfect hundred.” (Beats 1) The taqueria itself is named “The Information-Action Ratio” this comes from Neil Postman's book ‘Amusing Ourselves to Death’. “I was attracted to the idea as soon as I heard that phrase; even though it was in this book from [1985] it still seemed relevant—more relevant than it probably was when the guy made it up.” (Pitchfork) The phrase itself explains that we don’t need the vast amount of information we receive and that we don’t do much about this information. But it’s a great name for a taqueria on the roof of a hotel and casino on the moon. The track itself also gives us more of the story about the hotel itself. Mostly its location, other than the moon itself. We learn that the entire moon is getting gentrified due to an exodus. There’s also a really cool play musically where the last chorus literally is lifted up another semitone after it’s said at the end of the bridge. Onto the video for this one, the Kubrick fantasy filming begins here. Directed by Ben Chappell and Aaron Brown, the video was released on the 13th of May. The video was filmed at the Castle Howard in Yorkshire and the Munich Marienplatz station in Munich, Germany. The video starts with Turner playing a piano but then stopping to go look at the model of the hotel and casino. Throughout this video there’s sections where the track and video break a bit for some flashing red lights followed by some “doots” taking over the audio. Then, the video sees Turner taking the role of a director for some “Video Lifestyle Packages” for the hotel and casino. But it also gives us two different Turners. One with a beard, one without. The two doing seemingly parallel tasks within different areas. The other band members are also seen within the video, mostly jamming out. Especially with the nice little jam session with beardless Turner in the end. Due to the fact there’s two seemingly different Turners this has led to fan theories surrounding the video. Some stating that maybe the hotel and casino is some cover up for a mental hospital, another stating that maybe it’s both sides of his life (regulaprofessional). Assistants are also seen throughout the video setting up sets and other things, almost as if this was a film set. There’s also one scene in particular I’d like to touch on, the car scenes. This one is a bit important because it almost calls back the “haunt you via the rear-view mirror” line from Star Treatment. This scene was originally intended to be used in a video for Star Treatment, but they used it here instead. Overall, the video a bit of a visual treat with its cues from Stanley Kubrick and was more than a fitting visual return for Arctic Monkeys going into this era. THE WORLD’S FIRST EVER MONSTER TRUCK FRONT FLIP Yeah that’s a title to get your attention. The title comes from the actual event of the world’s first ever monster truck front flip. This was something that had caught Turner’s interest and will probably catch yours too upon just reading it. Sure, he may have only watched the video once, but the headline itself was what caught his attention. Later on, he used it create the base for what he was imagining with the track. “I think I imagined a sort of old presidents’ men style news room with just enough men in there. And sorta trying to get the editors attention like “You'll never believe it, somebody's done it forwards” and I think going off in my mind, perhaps and I thought, I don't know... It seems like that's where were at now innit, that sort of things are happening." (Radio X) The track itself lyrically describes TECHNOLOGY. More specifically, how people love their devices. “You push the button and we’ll do the rest” a repeating line that refers to how we’ve gotten so far that you can just push a button, and something will happen. Whether it be something within an app or data storage. Data storage is another important theme within the track. Our data is being stored everywhere. The track uses the data storage as a metaphor in many ways, with things like someone trying to breach into it. But overall the track itself just shows us how technology is changing us, references to technology changing us lie throughout. But we also see a bit of a jab at how no one wants to explain what the technology is exactly doing, “There are things that I just cannot explain to you, and those that I hope I don’t ever have to.” This wraps everything back around because it ties into the theme of just pushing a button and having everything done for us. We don’t see the background process, we don’t know what exactly they do, we just know that we can push a button and it will be done. SCIENCE FICTION True to the title, the track explores the themes of Science Fiction. Science Fiction is the “lobby model” of the album, as in it brings it all together. The track started with the idea of exploring Sci-Fi further and exploring worlds created from this, same with the album. One of the things in particular that sparked this was the Fassbinder film ‘World on a Wire’. Sci-Fi takes these themes and attempts to connect them to the real world and even Tranquility Base. Continuing the overarching theme of technology, this one takes the focus on how we’re viewing society due to technology, again. Making light touches on religion, we can see how in this “area” per say, science has won. But we also see how it feels like Sci-Fi is taking over in the form of a reality that feels strange and almost fictional at points. Technology keeps becoming a bigger part of our lives to the point where it almost disconnects us in a way. The narrator in this track wants to avoid that, he wants to stay within the life of his love. But it’s hard with things changing so much and society also changing. He states that he wants to make a “simple point” about peace and love but not too obviously. And this track almost feels like that point. But then it takes a bit of a turn at the end. We see the narrator take this back a bit and Turner begin to doubt if he’s wandering on too much with the track itself. “So, I tried to write a song to make you blush. But I’ve a feeling that the whole thing, may well just end up too clever for its own good.” Describing it as too clever shows that he feels like he’s overthinking it all. With a track with an almost double meaning like this it is a bit easy to understand why it may be “too clever”. SHE LOOKS LIKE FUN Ah yes, the rock and roll song of the record. Or well, the rock and roll without the roll. IT’S ALL ROCK MUSIC TO ALEX TURNER DAMMIT. This track has been described as frenzy but controlled. The structure of the track itself reflects that, “It goes like 3 verses in this tune before anything else changes. And I think like by that third one you get this sense of like you shouldn't be doing it again, it's time to move somewhere else. And eventually it does happen.” (Radio X) The main idea for this track came from the fact we almost create these “characters” within the virtual world. You know, your online presence through social media. The title itself is refrained throughout the track as the chorus and refers to how we just look a photo and decide what people are like. In this case the female titular character of the track is described to look like “fun”. Furthermore, this is joined but what may seem to be a non-sensical string of words. But, it’s meant to represent scrolling through a social feed like Instagram. “As far as the “cheeseburger” line, I was actually watching an episode of the show “High Maintenance,” and there’s a part where the person’s taking their picture with a cheeseburger and posting it and all this.” (Pitchfork) The verses focus more on the internet culture and the behavior of those within. Whether this behavior be something like a VR experience of New Year’s Eve at Bruce Wayne’s Manor or being a dickhead to someone. It’s about how we can almost do whatever we want with almost no restrictions in this virtual landscape. The bridge brings it to a point where we realize, it almost feels like everything is online nowadays. This follows by some lines of Turner criticizing himself for constantly talking about marital arts to people in bars. This mostly draws from Turner’s frequent kickboxing sessions. “Maybe sometimes I put stuff into a song to stop myself from doing it - I think I’m just realising that’s true. Like there’s a line in the middle of She Looks Like Fun about waffling on to strangers about martial arts in bars, and that was definitely something I was doing a lot of and was aware I needed to stop doing.” (Mojo Magazine) Also this marks the second time within the album where he says something regarding the music and it happens. This time being in the form of a key change. The last chorus features a key change that is in time with him stating it in the track. BATPHONE The all mighty Batman comes into a focus theme upon this track! Okay... Barely. A “Batphone” in the sense of this track is a direct line to Turner via his phone. The track deals with analysis and criticism of technology all at once. Opening on Turner realizing that he can just use a search engine to find a more interesting word to describe what he’s trying to say. Which, it wasn’t always like this, there was a time where you’d have to go through whole thesauruses to find this interesting words or phrases. Now they’re just a click/tap/touch away. Moving along we see that the narrator in the track specifically is of high class, stating that there’s much to discuss over a game of golf. Of course, that is phrased better within the track itself but for simplicities sake I’m just going to leave it at that. Then he gets into the fact life is a “spectator sport”. Through social media we sit and watch other people’s lives unfold like watching a sport almost. Then we get to a line that may seem more polarizing that it is. “I launch my fragrance called ‘Integrity’ I sell the fact that I can’t be bought.” Upon hearing this line for the first time you may think “What the fuck kind of pretentious bullshit is this trying to be?” Well, that’s exactly where you’re wrong. The idea of a fragrance called ‘Integrity’ is literally just that. “With something like that, I can’t sit here and tell you I wanted to make some comment about integrity and my relationship to it, and then make a fucking perfume out of it and write a smart-ass line like that. It’s more like I see the shape of the letters of “integrity” on the perfume bottle in my mind’s eye—once you know what that font looks like, then it writes itself after that.” (Pitchfork) Yeah, the line came from the visualization of perfume literally called ‘Integrity’. (Which, hilariously, there is one now called that.) Back to the lyrics, we see Turner talk about how he got “sucked into a hole” through a handheld device, this means his phone. Of course, we do all get a bit sucked into our phones now and again. It happens. And now it’s easier than ever. This being due to things like updates to make it easier to access things. The glow of the low beams within this track may be the car lights of your lover. But we do know that he will be by the Batphone if you need to get a hold of him at all. With our phones so close to us at all times, it’s almost like we all have personal Batphones. Then we get into how phones have changed over time. Coining them as “re-decorated” with new lights and sidebars upon them changing. Back the chorus again we see Turner sitting in his living room, with blinds closed, watching the lights of cars going by, but knowing that he'd know those of the car of his lover. Ending upon the panoramic windows again. These are said to be “looking out across your soul”, this is simply just our phone screens. They’re glass, windows are glass. But we look and see things on display including our souls, you know, our lives. Thus, making your soul being put on display through these “windows”. Sure, it’s not just your own soul, there are other people in this world, but it’s important you know that it is yours first and foremost on display. Always remember, whatever you put online, others will see. THE ULTRACHEESE Our closing track is a something that could be called Turner’s “Default Position” at this rate. But that does not mean it’s a bad thing. This track in particular is one where we see the Pet Sounds influenced recording style come to life, with multiple drum kits, multiple guitars, and pianos within the recording. The track sees Turner reflect on his past and how things have changed overtime. The title comes from the fact that the track may be a bit too “Cheesy” for everyone except himself. Songwriting of course has changed over time the most for him, upon talking about old tracks he stated, “It feels like we’re doing a cover or something when we play the first album, really, but that’s fine. I don’t hate doing that. It’s just come to the point where I play ‘Mardy Bum’ or something like that and it doesn’t even feel like mine anymore.” (BeatRoute) He feels disconnected from his old lyrics, which is sad but true statement. Of course, this track also touches quickly upon the themes of technology and politics throughout the track. But overall, it’s more just a personal reflection upon everything. Turner even describes himself as not being deep in thought, even if it looks like he was. He’s just living his life, good or bad, it’s just how everything is going down. The track ends the album on the line “I’ve done some things that I shouldn’t have done, but I haven’t stopped loving you once.” We all have things we regret in our lives. Sometimes that shit gets us out of nowhere and ends up on our minds. But we also see Turner telling his lover that he just loves them throughout it. Throughout all the good, the bad, the dirty bullshit, he still loves them.
THE B-SIDE (Anyways)
Yeah I was not finishing this without talking about the B-Side that was released with the title track on the 7” single. The B-side is titled ‘Anyways’ and was cut from the album. “I had a song that didn’t make this record with lyrics that mentioned both Bing Crosby and Randy Newman. And I just thought, You can’t do that. You can have one or the other. Just fucking calm down! You don’t want to make a song too lumpy.” (Vulture) Anyways here means the topic of a conversation and trying to change it. The narrator keeps trying to change the conversation. This can be seen throughout the track with a change in subject seemingly every few lines. One minute talking about toga parties, the next asking about if Mum and Dad are doing well. It’s just topic after topic in this “race” to Anyways. Technology appears again, with a quick mention of oversharing, something that is prevalent throughout the world of social media. Going back the Four Out of Five video from earlier we have a quick mention of a double life. This of course being the public/personal personas or home/professional personas. Much of the rest of the track just shows Turner bearing his all out there for everyone to see and making light of this. “You sort of reveal a piece of something as you’re writing and recording it. Then you find what you’re attracted to, scribble away a bit more of the dust and discover a bit more of the picture. Gradually, it becomes what it is. Each time you reveal another bit of it, it commits you to take the next step.” (BeatRoute) Some argue that this would have made a more “fitting” close for the album than The Ultracheese, other argue that it could have fit in literally anywhere on the album. Overall, I’m just glad it did get released it in the end.
REFLECTIONS IN THE SILVER SCREEN (An Outro)
I first listened to the album when it leaked. Shit on me all you want but I was just so curious. The whole no singles thing intrigued me alongside the sci-fi theme. I was looking for something different and I found it with this album. At the time did I know this was going to be my album of the year? No. Fuck, I barely knew anything about AM at the time apart from Do I Wanna Know?. I coined it as something along the lines of “What Death of A Bachelor could should been.” Turner constantly describes this album as one where he wanted to take people to a place, to this imaginary hotel and casino, and I was taken there upon first listen. I felt like I was sitting, watching a longue singer belt out tunes about his life. Of course, now on the right night I can recreate that feeling, but not always. But the album has just stuck me. Sure, many upon first hearing it found it off putting, but I loved it since first listen. If anything, this album was what made me a fan. This is what me look at AM and go “There’s something here I was missing.” Sure, it did take me months to act upon that, but I’m glad I did. Do I know where AM are going to go next? No. I don’t think any of us really do anymore. This album proved how unpredictable it is to calculate Arctic Monkeys in a way. Maybe the next record will be guitar based again, maybe not. We’ll only know when it comes, no matter how far away that is.
In Depth Theory: Stephen Paddock wasn’t the Vegas shooter. He was offered money to stockpile guns for another criminal, and upon meeting at the hotel, was shot in the head and the criminal carried out the killing.
This is a theory I came up with three or four days after the shooting when the police were unable to find any motive whatsoever from Paddock. To this day, no motive has been ascribed to him. Here’s the theory.
Stephen Paddock is a well-off man who enjoys gambling. However, he’s always looking to make extra money to put down in Vegas.
In a casino, he’s propositioned by the Vegas shooter about buying guns. The Vegas shooter knows that he would never pass background checks to buy the needed guns for a shooting, due to a prior criminal record and/or the shooter isn’t planning on being caught.
The shooter offers Paddock a deal: Paddock, with his spotless criminal record, will stockpile guns. Paddock won’t have any trouble passing background checks as an older, wealthy man with nothing to hide. Plus, he’s already had some guns in the past.
During the collection, he kept in touch with the Vegas shooter with his computer.
To avoid suspicion by dealers, he bought guns from all across the Southwest. “He visited gun stores in Nevada, Utah, California and Texas, where he purchased rifles, pistols and shotguns.”
While amassing the stockpile, he decides to keep some for himself. He buys nine for his homes, which were later found in his houses in Mesquite and Verdi, Nevada, near Reno.
He also is buying rounds of ammunition and up to 50 pounds of these exploding targets, which he leaves in the car. It’s worth it, though, because he’s being offered a hefty sum by a gambler who made enough to pay him in Vegas.
Finally, on the day of the Vegas shooting, the Vegas shooter sends Paddock a message about meeting to collect the guns. Paddock agrees, and then the shooter tells Paddock to rent a room in the Mandalay Bay Hotel, preferably in an obscure, high floor to complete the transaction.
THE DAY OF THE SHOOTING
The Vegas shooter comes to the hotel to collect the guns from Paddock, or so Paddock thinks.
Paddock lets the shooter in and turns his back to walk to the guns laid out on the floor while telling him that he kept the explosives in the parking lot, as he didn’t want to accidentally set them off in a hotel. He’ll I’ve him then later.
As his back is turned, the shooter walks up to him and shoots him at point blank range. Although he would have liked to strangle or poison him to avoid noise, it wouldn’t fit if he were to frame him for suicide (keep reading).
Carefully, the shooter positions a gun on the ground as to make it seem like Paddock shot himself.
Next, he opens up Paddock’s computer and removes the hard drive.
Now alone with the guns, the Vegas shooter props open the window to the 32nd floor hotel room window and opens fire on the people below.
After feeling his window for escape is closing, the Vegas shooter stops firing and returns to where Paddock is lying dead in a framed suicide.
*Patting his pocket to check for the hard drive, the Vegas shooter slips away into a bathroom, where he hunkers down with his hands over his head and pretends to be hiding from gunfire. Later, he leaves the hotel as police find Paddock’s dead body surrounded by an arsenal of exhausted, heated, guns. —————— Largest evidence supporting the theory 1) Missing hard drive, not missing computer. You’d think that if Paddock acted alone and still wanted to dispose of the computer, he would’ve done so WITH the hard drive. Why would he carry around a hard drive-less computer? A person slipping away wouldn’t want to be carrying a computer, but a hard drive? That can be easily concealed. Regardless of this theory, the fact that Paddock would want to hide the hard drive is astounding evidence that he was in contact with others to plan the shooting. 2) Lack of a motive Why would a wealthy man, not indebted, never committing criminal acts, never showing signs of illness, quit life murdering en mass? It doesn’t check out and the police still can’t find anything. 3) Why would a shooter keep ammunition in the parking lot? Reports say that he kept explosives and ammunition in his car. Why would he do that if he was meaning to use ammo to shoot people from his room? 4) Why didn’t the shooter shoot the shooting targets in his car? If he were planning on shooting targets to explode, why didn’t he? The 50 pounds of explosives were found in his car, but not set off by gunfire. The only explanation I can think of is if the shooter didn’t know where the car was, because it wasn’t his. 4) Paddock was stockpiling for nearly a year. Wouldn’t he show symptoms of lunacy in that time if he was planning on indiscriminate mass killing? It want a spontaneous shooting, yet no one that knew Paddock reports him acting differently in any way. Unless he was a master at hiding his rage, paranoia, depression, what have you, then it would be because he wasn’t actually feeling those things. Biggest questions I would have about the theory 1) What about security camera footage? If the shooter entered the room, wouldn’t there be security camera footage of it? It’s a good question that I don’t know. 2) Why did the shooter keep more guns for himself in this Reno homes? The shooter kept nine guns additional guns to add to the 14 he previously owned. Why would he keep guns in his home if he were planning on handing them out to the shooter? Again, it’s a valid question. My idea is that he, as a previously established gun fan, saw them and wanted them for himself as he was buying for the shooter, similarly to when you buy clothes for yourself when shopping for a present for someone else. ———————- NOTE: I’m not saying I believe this, but it’s the best alternative I can think of to the common theory that Paddock was deranged and shot them himself. Also, if you publish a murder mystery using these points, I expect at least a 5% cut ;)
On This Date In California Weather History (September 11)
2017: Some deep tropical moisture associated with a fairly strong upper level shortwave pushed into central California on September 11th and produced a severe thunderstorm outbreak during the afternoon and evening. Numerous reports of downburst winds exceeding 60 mph were reported and the impacts form these thunderstorms included downed power lines, damage to roofs; and large objects being knocked over and damaged. Rainfall amounts were generally a quarter of an inch or less with a few locations in the Southern Sierra Nevada and Tehachapi Mountains receiving between a quarter inch and a half inch of rain. APRS station 5WSW Firebaugh reported a 59 mph wind gust from a thunderstorm. A dairy farm south of Hanford had several barns with extensive roof damage from thunderstorm winds. 8 telephone poles were downed on Jackson Ave. near 9th Ave. south of Hanford. A tree fell onto a vehicle near the intersection of 13th Ave. and Houston Ave. near Hanford. A microburst downed 30 powerlines in Mendota. 8 miles west of Caruthers a chicken barn was blown down by thunderstorm downburst outflow winds. In Corcoran thunderstorm winds produced damage to a house and snapped several trees. Beams from a wood fence were snapped from from concrete support and shingles were blown off of a roof. There were reports of nickel-sized hail in Corcoran. There were several trees down on northbound State Route 99 just south of the State Route 190 interchange. Lightning struck a house near Hanford High School. A Weather Service forecaster providing onsite support at the Pier Fire reported penny sized hail at Pierpoint Springs. 2012: A stationary thunderstorm brought persistent, heavy rain to Mecca. 3"-5" of rain fell in just a couple hours (more than a year’s worth). Floodwaters damaged a school, a mobile home park and several orchards. 2012: On the afternoon of September 11, 2012 thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall moved across much of the Las Vegas Valley. Rainfall rates of a half-inch to nearly eight-tenths of an inch in 30 minutes resulted in significant and in some cases devastating flash flooding. A total of 1.18" of rain was measured by the automated weather station at McCarran International Airport. This set an all-time record for a calendar day for the month of September. Automated weather stations operated by the Clark County Regional Flood Control District as well as Mesonet weather stations, cooperative observers and spotter reports showed the heaviest rain fell in several areas. 1"-2" of rain fell in northern portions of Summerlin, NV, in and just south of downtown Las Vegas, NV, along Flamingo Road and Tropicana Avenue from near Interstate 15 to near Mojave Road and in southeast Henderson, NV. The highest total reported was 2.09" at an automated station operated by the Clark County Regional Flood Control District near Swenson Avenue and Flamingo Road by the Tropicana Wash. According to local media reports, at least 50 vehicle rescues took place throughout the Las Vegas Valley by Clark County Firefighters. 40 of these were swiftwater rescues. The largest number of rescues was 15 near the intersection of Sloan and Sahara with one rescue done by helicopter. Roadway flooding was extensive with several inches to several feet of flowing water reported on many roads especially in the central and eastern parts of the Las Vegas Valley. Interstate 215 was closed from Interstate 15 to Eastern Avenue after intense rainfall washed large amounts of mud and rocks onto the highway from nearby landscaping along the side of the road. This also resulted in the Airport Connector to McCarran International Airport being closed. The Charleston Underpass flooded for the first time since extensive construction work was done to mitigate this once flood-prone area back in the mid-2000s. The worst impacted area though was near the Desert Rose Golf Course. At least 45 homes were flooded mainly on and near Walton Heath Avenue. Most of these homes suffered extensive damage to their lowest level with many people loosing furniture and appliances. In some cases the force of floodwaters busted through concrete walls. Numerous vehicles in this area were flooded and some were floated 300 to 400 feet. Three dogs drowned to death that lived in one house. In addition, a worker at the Desert Rose Golf Course was swept away by the floodwaters from his tractor around 4:22 PM PDT on September 11th. His body was found dead two days later about two and a half miles away. 2011: Small hail was reported at Bodfish and Lake Isabella as was street flooding which was also reported in Kernville. 2011: Monsoonal thunderstorms brought flooding to Downtown Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Strip. A rain gauge in Downtown Las Vegas recorded 0.98" of rain in about 20 minutes. Water ponded up over curbs of streets from Downtown Las Vegas to North Las Vegas. Several inches of water flooded the Circus Circus Adventuredome. The parking lot at the Cannery Casino in North Las Vegas was flooded.... with some cars partially underwater. A few inches of water also entered part of the casino and movie theater. 2008: The Cascadel Fire began on this date in the Sierra National Forest at 2000 PST. The cause was human, from target shooting. The location was 3 miles East-Northeast of North Fork in Madera County. It burned 280 acres and was contained on September 17 at 1700 PST. There were no fatalities or properties damaged. The cost to containment was $3,100,000. 2008: A thunderstorm produced strong outflow winds measured at 67 mph in La Quinta. Another thunderstorm produced golf ball sized hail in Ranchita. 2004: The Nehouse Fire 25 miles east of North Fork in Madera County burned 204 acres. Its cause was human in origin but no fatalities,injuries, or structures-lost occurred. 2004: Severe thunderstorms in Borrego Springs produced one inch hail that broke windows. Strong winds gusted to 60 mph before the anemometer was destroyed, and knocked down six power poles. Training thunderstorms over Johnson Valley produced severe flash flooding. Hwy. 247 was washed out in numerous sections. Minor damage to homes occurred and 12 vehicles were trapped. In La Quinta, 138 trees were knocked down at one golf course with damage to a building. More trees fell down at other golf courses. Roof tiles were blown off. Damage occurred to power poles and transformers. 2004: The China Fire began on this date 15 miles southwest of Lake Isabella in Kern County. This suspiciously-caused fire burned 314 acres but there were no fatalities, injuries, or structures-lost. 2001: On this date 19 hijackers seized 4 U.S. commercial jetliners on the East Coast and flew two aircraft into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City destroying them, one aircraft into the Pentagon Building near Washingon, DC, causing severe damage, and one was destined for another target in the Washington, DC, area (either the White House or the U.S. Capitol Building) but the passengers resisted and the hijackers crashed the plane near Shanksville, PA. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed and civilian air traffic into, out of, and within the United States was grounded for days afterwards. 1998: Severe thunderstorms pounded the Las Vegas Valley and Lake Mead for a few hours producing golf ball size hail, a small tornado and widespread flash flooding. Large hail began falling shortly before 11 am PST and numerous hail reports came in for the next couple hours with some episodes causing damage to several automobiles. A small tornado tore the roof off a Henderson, NV, warehouse and destroyed a large block wall at a service station a short distance away. Heavy rain fell mainly on the east side of the metro area with amounts up to 1.85" in a two hour period. As a result flash flooding filled streets and washes and trapped several motorists although no serious injuries occurred. The heavy rain damaged about one acre of the 750 acre Sunrise Landfill and carried significant amounts of debris into the Las Vegas, NV, wash. The Clark County School District activated the "shelter-in-place" policy for school children at approximately 30 schools around the area. Children were not bused home until after flooding had subsided. 1990: It was 117° F in Borrego Springs, the highest temperature on record for September. This also occurred the previous day on 9.10. 1983: Half Moon Bay had a high of 94° F -- a record for the month. 1982: The morning low temperature at Reno, NV was a chilly 29° F. 1976: Record rains that started on 9.9 ended on 9.12 came from Tropical Storm Kathleen (called a 160+ year event by meteorologists). 14.76" fell on south slopes of Mt. San Gorgonio, 10.13" at Mt. Laguna, 8" at Mt. San Jacinto, 4"+ in the Little San Bernardino Mountains, and 1.8"-2.8" in the Coachella Valley. Deep Canyon (above La Quinta) recorded 2.96" in three hours on 9.10. Rainfall in the Santa Rosa Mountains above the Coachella Valley was called the a heaviest in recorded history. 6 were buried and killed in sand in Ocotillo. Floods of record were attained at numerous streams around the Coachella Valley. 1.84" of rain fell in Riverside on this day, 2.09" fell in Borrego Springs, 2.33" fell in Victorville, 2.57" fell in Idyllwild, and 5" fell in Palomar Mountain, each the greatest daily amounts on record for September. The Victorville amount is also the third highest daily amount on record. This occurred during the El Nino of 1976-77. Hurricane Kathleen also brought the southwest the highest sustained winds ever associated with an eastern Pacific tropical cyclone with sustained winds of 57 mph at Yuma on 9.10. 1976: The remains of Hurricane Kathleen move across Baja and into southern California near El Centro. With its circulation still intact, tropical storm force winds produce considerable damage in Yuma. Sustained winds exceed 50 mph, and gust as high as 76 mph in Yuma, AZ. One man is killed as a 75 foot palm tree crashes onto his mobile home. Severe flooding occurs in Mohave county. 1971: It was 100° F in Palomar Mountain, the highest temperature on record. This occurred on eight other occasions. 1960: North northwestward moving Hurricane Estelle dissipated west of the central Baja California coast from 9.9 to this day. On this day a thunderstorm hit the area east of Lucerne Valley. The resulting flash flood was four feet deep and washed out a section of road, stranding several vehicles east of Lucerne Valley. 1952: Chilliest morning in three day stretch from the 10th through 12th in Fresno; record lows were set each on morning and all still stand to this day. Low of 44° F on this date is the earliest 45° F or lower reading on record in Fresno. 1939: 4"of rain fell across the deserts and mountains as a dying tropical cyclone moved across Baja California into southwestern Arizona on this day and on 9.12. This was the second tropical cyclone to impact California during the busy month of September 1939. A strong El Nino contributed to the activity. 1939: The remnants from the second of three tropical cyclones to affect the southwestern U.S. in one month floods homes in Eldorado Canyon, roads in the California Wash near Glendale and washed out parts of Charleston Blvd. near Rancho Blvd. in Las Vegas, NV. 1888: Fresno set an all-time record high of 111° F for the month of September. I know that there is posts for making vault ideas already, but i wanted to list some of my own comment on them if you want and please suggest some ideas for new ones.
Background to my Vaults
One of the great minds of vault-tec is Alexander Markusburg, who created a lot more gecks then vault-tec ever said they made. Including 5 'Super Gecks', powerful enough to make the others Alexander made worthless. Afraid and worried for the world, he went and with numerous allies created many more vaults all over the world, known as the A-G vaults. He placed his super gecks in 5 special vaults under 5 certain cities. Soon he went into his private vault under the Berlin wall, known as the Berlin Vault. Inside is him, who created tons of bodies for himself and froze his old one, His head scientists who also have a few clone bodies, and numerous people brought in to help test his ideas, creations, and more. However one more thing,....due to the idea of magic from the dunwich locations in fallout, he was both a scientist, and a mage. Note: Alexander is not op because, well....you could disable all of his clones and then kill him easily so....yea, he is still human, just a smart one who made things he couldn't trust in anyone's hands. Also unlike Vault Tec, Alexander didn't want to experiment too much, and thus only the F and G vaults are the ones where more experiments take place, due how they were made by some scientists that joined him from Vault Tec, not trusting them either. Note 2: The Gun Runners are in a sense a company in the wasteland, thus if there is a base, and there is traders, you can still get companies. Note 3: Vaults A-E all are mostly harmless, with more less chaotic situations and experiments Note 4: I may not fit all of them here, so the most i will go to is to the 90th or 100th vault Note 5: There is a lot of character i will make for each vault, if you want a character to be featured in one of the A-G vaults say so Note 6: A mini geck is bascally a smaller portable geck with a few strong yet hard to recharge charges, once it's all used up, it breaks down.
The 5 Super Geck Vaults
The White House Vault: A vault under the white house in Washington DC. A secret from even the president, containing a super geck, a few other extra gecks, and tons of instructions, recreations of World Heritage sites and american locations, Armories, food storage, labs meant for the geck, 3 reactors, and a hall of Presidents and other Disney world like locations. The only person there is a Mr. Handy programmed to help who ever came learn how to control the super geck, he also is much stronger then other Mr. Handys.
The Great New York Vault: A vault under the statue of liberty in New York City. Filled with more labs, the super geck, other world heritage site locations recreated, libraries, 5 armories, some reactors, and more. Inside their lives a cult of female synths who all see the statue of liberty as a goddess, a powerful one. They are kind however some left and became the New York City cult known as the Daughters of The Lady. There is also of cruse instructions, and also some arcane rooms, meant for more.....mystical uses. Also it has a church in it, 2 to be correct, one for the synths, the other, for Christians.
The Rome Vault: A vault under the Roman Colosseum in rome. Like the others it has several rooms relating to gecks, LOTS of weapons, food, a few churchs, hertiage sites, instructions, The Super Geck, etc. However there is more, such as a room like the president's hall but with popes. The Oven of Eden, a machine that creates any food afther a card is scanned by it. The Arcaum of The New Templar, a massive church like room with tons of books and various labs, mystical rooms, and some rooms with Knight stuff. Finally, the Room of Culture, filled with all kinds of culture, with instructions on how to bring them back, as well as fake and fantasy ones, and few based on 60's to 2000's culture. The vault only has synths based on roman warriors and characters, as well as a large Dragon bot that tells people how to create fantasy creatures with the Super Geck.
The Saint Petersburg Vault: A vault under the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. It has it's Super Geck and various rooms that are common to the other mega vaults expect for a few. A room with all Tsars and Rulers of The Russian Empire, A series of rooms based on seasons, A terraforming test room with ideas on how to terra form some planets if earth got too bad, and a Room with every piece of Mythologies and all fantasy novels and comics. Another room there is a massive comic book room and a room with a punching bag with Stalin's face on it. Inside the only things there are 5 Synths styled after Russian Mythical Heros and 2 synth ladies in a strange tea room talking about some ideas based on the UK and Scandinavia coming together to defeat Russia.
The Tokyo Vault: A vault under Tokyo, in you guess it, Japan. It has all the commons of the other vaults, and like all the others has unique rooms to it. All are based on Japan, Asia, Oceania, and Recreating the Republic of China. One of the more note worthy rooms is a massive room filled with copies of every movie, video game, anime, tv show, and manga in the world. The only robot here is a kind AI called Ms. Nature-San, who controls a Synth to water the peaceful greenhouse within the vault.
The A Vaults (Scattered all over the world, and Alexander Jokes he placed one on the moon)
A1: Located under New York City, the vault is divided into 5 areas. The Blue Section, The Red Section, The Yellow Section, The Green Section, and the Center White section. Each area had special vault uniforms for them and petting zoos for animals. They had teams that would fight in the Center's Sports Arena, in 3 different sports, Baseball, Soccer, and Foot Ball. Each section has a different team for each, and the petting zoo has tamed animals of each team with in. The Vault is peaceful and is run by a council of 5 overseers, who are elected each year, where the main person meant to keep peace, is the overseer in white. It also has 5 Goliath droids who help defend the vault from attackers. Today it is a part of the Growing New New York City nation started by Vault A2.
A2: A vault filled with only scientists, and a massive library of all of the books on earth, even of religions, and one occult book of a made up goat based monster made by Alexander. Everyone there is very smart and raised to value the body and to grow the mind. However the outcasts of the vault, who had trouble keeping up with knowledge due to forgetful mindsets had found the occult book, and started a cult known as The Goatmen. Sadly when they tried to take over the smarter side of the vault created powerful robots that chased them out. The cult is still around but now the vault has created the New New York City nation with towns, and have worked to rebuild the city.
A3: A vault south of a little town in Alberta, Canada. This vault was made to have numerous cloth and armor making machines in it, as well as a few forges, and was filled with people who were either blacksmiths or tailors in some way. The vault's jumpsuits were so bad looking in design that it lead to the tailors making tons of outfits while the blacksmiths made both armor and weapons to keep them selves busy. Soon when the vault opened the Blacksmiths stayed in the vault turning it into Samson Works Co., named after the biblical judge. The tailors went to create a settlement that had the base of the new Spider's Silk Clothing Inc. another new business for the wasteland. With new towns and settlement cropping up, traders went to these two businesses and bought items from them sold them and gave them money back. The one issue is that the blacksmiths and tailors were always uneven at any point in time, only a few times were they equal in number.
A4: A vault near New Mexico city in New Mexico. This vault had a total of 3 areas in the vault that were simulation rooms, where the dwellers were given orders to have any kids believe this was real, and had to play along to the point of forgetting that it was fake. Only the Overseer and scientists knew the truth and keep the vault running in the background, each room having set up a special medical response incase any death had nearly come. The 1st of the rooms was the Old Sliver West, a western styled one that takes place during a sliver rush, a Mexican revolution, and the arrival of Gatling Guns to the west. The 2nd of the rooms was the Good Old Days~, a town like the simulation of tranquility lane in the sense that it's greatly like a 50's sitcom place and gives people nostalgia, with a sense of a war going on in the far far east in China, that could lead to the return of the republic. The last room was the Kingdom of Davoman, a fantasy and medieval land with 3 main rich families and everyone else being soldiers or just workers in various jobs around, with synths and robots acting as monsters and enemy kingdom soldiers. The main issue with the vault is how when found the simulation is still running, the overseer's family worried about things, due to how many of the others who knew the truth died. This leads to were the vault now having a total of 4 or so generations leading many people to not know the truth, but the scientists and overseer's family.
A5-a and A5-b: A pair vaults in North Eastern Brazil. The a section was filled with only women, while the b side only men. The two vaults had only two ways to get to each other, the reactor rooms or a single pair of doors that only the overseers could unlock. The two vaults each month had 5 days or so where the vaults opened up and the men and woman got together. Most of the time on some of these days there would be pairs of men and women who....well....made out and a lot of times had 'intercourse'. This led to love slowly fadeing away, between the two genders, only the overseers were around each other enough to know what love was. Whoever finds the vaults teaches the two about what real love is, leading to some going off in various groups to build relationships and love while some stayed at the vault, which was eventually abandoned when the last pair got together and left.
A6: A vault about 12 miles north east of Las Vegas Nevada, or in this case New Vegas. This vault was filled with mechanics and various new types of Mr. Handies, Ms. Nannies, Protectrons, and other bot types. The mechanics would creation new robots based on the tons of parts and spare supplies around the vault, which had several garages with in for the robots. Some of them broke off, and made a large garage nearby the vault called 'Red Hot Hot Rods' Garage, where they made cars and other modes of transportation. The ones that stayed turned the vault and the area around it into a city, like Vault 8. Known as The Roboyard, a massive city of robots, mechanics, and more stood to rival new Vegas, and thus many securtrons can be found in the city, reprogrammed by the mechanics there.
A7: A vault under a small city in Queensland Australia. This vault was not only filled with 1040 Australians and Aboriginals, but also 40 Dogs, 40 cats, 67 goldfish, and 55 koi. The vault's Scientists tested with the dogs, cats, and fish, using the vault's bio dome with in it to test them, and soon created several new speices of Dogs, Cats, and Goldfish/Koi. However due to the cloneing used to help create the new speices, the animals were started to outnumber the humans, so the scientists put the vault into 'GREEN HOUSE' mode which made the bio sphere grow it's self out and transform the vault into a underground jungle and lake, with the large hill it was built into's top to crack open like a crater showing the massive paradise of dogs, cats, and fish below. Now a days more animals found their way in and the animals either eat plants (the fish do this) or the Rats, Wild Pigs, and wild chickens. The People who left live nearby in a town called Merrybrook, as they live by several brooks.
A8: A vault in North most Scotland, noted for it's mostly isolated location, until 500 people flocked there to live in the vault. This vault was made to have it to were the scientists tested Brain science on humans who wanted to, most humans that did were made into Synth Cyborgs, which most were ok with. The Vault soon become free to open 100 years after the bombs droped, however...like a certain other vault, the 500 people where split into what to do now. The 5 Groups were, The New Scots, People who wanted to rebuild scotland and make it a kingdom greater then the Uk, The Loyal Brits, English and Scots who wanted to help rebuild the UK and grow it into europe, The White Knights, a group of various Christians and Jews who wanted to help people, and thus went on to make Knight based armors and weapons to become the saviors of Europe. The last 2 were the Spring Heeled Gang, a group of thugs and punks who became a raider like group and based themselves in a nearby Mill, turning it into a factory, and The Vault Loyalists, who simply stayed in the vault to keep working on enchanceing humans and working on the future of brain science. Most Synth-Human Hybrids stayed at the vault with a chunk of scientists.
A9: A vault in North eastern New Mexico, USA. The vault is made with an AI that has made 100,000+ Radio Stations of all kinds. The People in the vault are very peaceful and many of theme style themselves after their favorite radio station, leading to Music Genres creating cultures in the vault. The AI also seeked to make many items based on the more story radio stations and such, leading to suits and collectables being pumped out. When the doors opened the Vault was uncovered by a swarm of wandering Builders known as the 'Hammer 99'ers' who helped turn old Vault A9 into a capital building for a new city with the wandering group's Geck working with this vault's geck. When the Swarm of builders left, the Vault dwellers went and made a city of Radio Stations, Music, and so many cultures and mindsets, called Radio Tower City, noted for the massive radio tower in the city's center. They also walled off the city for protection, but the radio signals travel very far, due to the AI's love for people to hear music, stories, and ideas.

The B Vaults (Mostly North America, and the Caribbean)
B1: A vault under a large Donut Cafe in Seattle, Washington. This vault was filled with mostly Bakers and gardeners. The Vault was filled with tons of sweet making machines and ovens, and a massive garden filled with the ingredients required for it. Over time, the craft of sweets, Donuts, Chocolate, Coffee, Tea, and even Soda all became mastered by the people of the vault. They soon left and make a fortress of the Donut Cafe and turned it into the headquarters of the Happy Sweets Bakery and Cafe business. As well as a home for the former vault Dwellers. Most people have build a settlement around here called Donutberg, after the town's favorite pastry. The vault was to test if time would make certain food items more loved then others as well as a way to keep tons of snack foods alive.
B2: A vault in northern Nevada, not too far from the Mojave. This vault was kind of like Vault 21 from New Vegas, but instead of gambling, every major choice for the Vault was settled on Pool Games and Air Hockey. Overtime the dwellers grew to love the simple vault life, but soon the time came to leave and make a new town. The Overseer was a vert ambitious man, and bet that when they leave they could make their own Reno, their own Vegas. It was staked with the voice of the other dwellers, and for the overseer, this meant the future. However, he won and they left, and used their smaller, less powerful Mini-Geck to help build the city. The City was called Tamdon, City of Games. The city became nearly as popular as New Vegas, as the city had several arcades, casinos, and tons of restaurants and hotels.
The C Vaults (Mostly in Asia and Oceania)

The D Vaults (Mostly in South and Centural America as well as Africa and the Middle East)
D1: A vault located in Cairo Egypt, a little near the city's outer areas. This vault is meant to keep Egyptian Culture and Islam alive. However overtime, some less kind Muslims and Egyptian Pagans had a dispute that divided the large vault in two. One side contains mostly Muslims, with a couple of Christians and Jews, who all get along well, the Christians have a small church as do the Jews with the synagogue. The Muslims have a large Mosque in their side of the vault and tend to be peaceful, unless it's with the Pagans. The Pagans have styled their side after classical Egyptian styles, patterns, art, and more and worship old Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. They do however have a roman group that left a few years after the vault doors unlocked, and went to start fixing the city. Although they don't all get a long, the Muslims, Christians, Jews, Pagans, and Roman styled people all left and started building a large settlement in the ruins of Cairo. The town is known as simply Neo Cairo, and is well loved by the people who live there. Currently the Town's mayor ending up being a Christian from the growing group of said Christians who wants to keep the peace between all the groups. The vault was noted for 5 Unique suits of Power Armor that were based on the following Egyptian Gods, Ra, Anubis, Set, Horus, and Bastet.
D2: (Idea is Octson's on Discord) This Brazilian vault idea of Octson's would be big but half of it became inhabitable with that inhabitable side having humanoid zombie like monsters with baby Limbs around their body. How these monsters were there in the first place is because of a series of experiments the vault has of artificial pregnancy with the intent of using the serum to recover the Brazilian population easily. The serum for artificial pregnancy was supposed to work on both genders and when the experiments start it shows that it dose work on women but the men that bravely participated in the experiment? They slowly died and came back mutated because of the different sex organs. This would be located in Rio, and is near a small town made by survivors near it, of Scientists who wish to spread the working pregnancy medicine to other women in the world, and is strongly trying to keep the women alive at all costs.
D3: (Octson's idea) This vault is in Kenya, 53 miles from the largest city in Kenya. Well Octson thinks Africa wouldn't look drastically different in fallout due to it mostly being a desert. But he thinks the radiation would've made the place a little cold along with mutating some of the animals. What's the African vaults solution? Mix lion/lioness DNA with the inhabitants of the vault so they could be able to survive the outside cold. This results in the vault being inhabited by anthro lion/lionesses, they still have 5 fingers and toes along with stronger immunity to some sicknesses but they are now vulnerable to lion based sicknesses, they are a bit physically stronger then regular humans but they have been decided into 3 groups, People who want a Kenyan republic, people who want a communist union, and a Stratocray made from former guards and soldiers. The Groups split off into 3 large settlements. New Nairobi, for the republicans, Mji Mkuu Mpya, for the communists, and Upanga, for the Stratocrats. Each group has different ways to rebuild Kenya, with the Republicans trying to also fix the environment and trying to help Nomads from the north (all the way to europe). The communists are trying to contact china to try to get help to build a new Communist union, and want to destory and conquer the other groups. The Stratocrats simply want a world were the Military rules but have a alliance with the democrats to help beat the Commies.
The E Vaults (Mostly in Europe)
E1: A vault apart of a series of vaults in Europe, this one being seen and located in Eastern Greece near the boarder of Turkey. This vault was made to be filled with tons of Greek culture and even had many weapons, power armor suits, and items made in Greek mythology and cultural styles. The inside even has columns, fig farms, and the guards wear Greek like armor. In this vault, instead of a overseer, there was a council called Olympus, who lived in a large office with rooms themed after each member. The council by the time the vault opened became the typical rulers of these people who grew so used to it, they saw Greek culture and style as the future. They went to create New Athens a massive mega city in Europe. Still ruled by a council and making various more medieval/middle ages in terms of weapons, like swords, bows and arrows, etc. They do still use high tech, yet have their own versions of it styled in a very ancient Greece or Greek mythology fashion. Such as plasma rifles called Zeus Rifles, and shooting blue more electric bolts of plasma instead of the normal green. The Vault is current being turned into a Museum of Greece's history, as well as lifestyles of New Greece. The vault also houses many advanced tech, which have been used to make more normal versions of mutated animals, it being called a Geck Lite, a weak yet very useful geck.
The F Vaults (aka when Alexander's vaults ended, and his fellow scientists vaults started afther these, alexander pulled the plug fully on vault building but 32 more scientists still went out and made some. All are near the water)
F1: A vault near the coast of Finland, noted for part of it being under water. This vault was set up to contain 400 humans, and multiple finish animals. The dwellers were told to treat everyone with respect, but also to obey the vault's 'Grandfather' with out question. The Grandfather overtime had the people become more in touch with finish culture and history, some left the vault over time and made the small settlement of New Karsa, a very viking styled town that is filled with both christians, and pagans. However inside, the Grandfather became more insane, like a certain overseer from Fallout 3. He soon started training some of the animals to be his guard, the others were protected by him as he soon dawned a viking styled power armor he made over the years. Soon he convince multiple people to follow him, and then the vault dwellers were killed by Grandfather 'Yuro' as he called himself now, his animals, and his followers. The ones who lived sealed the vault and escaped to New Karsa. They used some tech to build a few turrets incase Yuro ever got out.
F2: Located on the northern coast of Finland, 500 miles from Vault F3. Unlike F1, the vault had more of a mix of people instead of mostly Finnish people. The Vault had a special FEV strain known as the 'YFEV' aka the Yeti Forced Evolutionary virus. Over time it was pumped to everyone in the vault expect for the scientists. The virus kept genders and sexes unlike the FEV, and made both special in different ways. The males can take a lot more damage and are a bit faster, but the females, although shorter, are immune to more sicknesses and tend to have much higher stamina. Soon after the pumping stopped, the Yetis were tricked into allowing the scientists to control them, creating the Finnish Yeti Horde controlled by the scientists until they were killed by Yuro, then the yetis made different tribes based on what they though was best.
The G Vaults (only 32, made in the last few years before the bombs started falling across the world, made by the Lucky 32 scientists, as each made one of the vaults. All are under a existing building)
G1: The Vault's location is right under Google Headquarters. A vault like the one in Van Buren, where it's controled by an AI. However, the vault is massive and divided into 10 sections based on the AI there who brainwash and change the dwellers who end up in their part of the vault and make sure any children born in their areas remain loyal to the AI. Made by code name Dr. Seven Clovers, to test how many times humans can be brainwashes before they break and try to die from the insanity of not knowing who they really are. The AI include Duchess Sliver, who is a fancy and somewhat kind woman who picks favorites and has the woman try to look like famous stars and have the men be 'butlers', which lead to men eventuality being seen as slaves in this section, only there to make more daughters by the time the player find them. The next AI is a much kinder AI called Mother Maria, personaitly wise she is kind of like Curie, in how she is kind, curious, and scientific, however she loves to test with her humans and treats them like kids, but knows her bountries with some. She made them mentally think all the tests are good, even if they get mutated. The next AI is a Patriotic AI known as President John Freedom, a Uncle Sam like figure who wants all the people there to be soldiers and strong patriots, basically the humans there are exteremly strong hyper patriots, and have grown to super mutant size. A creepier AI know as Der Nachtmensch, a AI who loves horror and thus makes his dwellers love horror movies, giving them kind yet very Morbid mindsets, however they hate it when people insult them, and hate anything that looks like one of John's Hyper Patriots. Chairman Mako is the next AI and is a Socialist-Communist based mind that has convinced everyone that they are either Australian or Chinese, and that America has fallen in to the USSR's hands. Warqueen Athena the next AI is a AI who thinks she is the greek goddess, her part of the vault is mostly greek styled and everyone man and woman dresses like so, and think they are in a underground town under their great kingdom of Greece. The Lion the one AI who took further steps in his transformations, making them all infused with African animal DNA, creating human animal hybrids, as the AI was of a Lion Man who wanted to bring a new Race, His section is sealed from the others and has 3 bio domes. Prime Minster Moonsworth a kind old britsh AI who wants to keep things prim and proper, and has his dwellers think that they are citizens of a Underground Mega London, which said Mega London he wishes to escape the vault to build. Viviana a Spanish lady with a kind heart but a lot of sass in her AI chip, she had her citizens become suit, dress, and cloth loving guys and gals, but also made them a little on the rage side of things. Saint Bolts a AI who is religious and meant to be a 'In Case the Catholics are all dead and we need a new pope AI' who made all of his dwellers become Zealots in Catholic Christianity, but they love peace and will fight for their religion, The Pope wishes for some of the other AIs to leave due to how they threaten his people.
G2: A vault located in The Sunset Sarsaparilla Factory in the Mojave. The vault was filled with machines and plants to make sunset sarsaparilla, and lots of it. Simply when placed in slowly the vault workers mostly worked on making the drink, and they kept doing it. This was because the Overseer, over time was hypnotizing them to never stop working on the sarsaparilla, giving them few hours of sleep a day. He also killed anyone who didn't work for him, due to his own person securtrons his vault came with. He was hell bent to keep the drink alive, and no one was going to stop him, ever.

June 25, 1968 - Robinson Family Murders (Good Hart murders) - This was the mass murder of a family who was shot and killed in their vacation cottage in Good Hart, Michigan (US). The home belonged to a prominent magazine publisher in Detroit, Richard and Shirley Robinson and their four children. In July of that year, a caretaker for the neighborhood had been alerted to an odor coming from that area.
