Best computer for grad school (aka best computer for keeping 60 tabs, 3 word documents, two pdfs, and Youtube music running in the background on all at once without lag or crashing)

Hello guys! I am currently using my school's laptop, and am in the market for another computer. I do not like Chromebooks and am not the biggest fan of Acer. Looking for something that will last for another five to ten years.
Please don't suggest like a 5,000 computer, but any nice computer with a fantastic processor would be excellent. I've used a MacBook air and pro in the past, both of which were my favorite while they worked, but all ended up having factory malfunctions and Apple was terrible with fixing them. Also had a Microsoft Surface, which was very cool aesthetically, but was not terribly fast, and when I needed my backlight replaced, no one would repair it (including Microsoft). Currently using an HP from my school, which lags when I get to forty tabs open, even though it has a lot of a available memory.
yes, I know keeping forty tabs open at once is bad. However, I find it works so much better to make sure I get my to-do list done than using Notion or an agenda solely.
Thanks!
EDIT: to everyone suggesting the PC over a laptop, I understand and appreciate your suggestion - however, this is simply not functional for me for the next year. I move around a lot, both in terms of residence and workspace, and am applying for graduate school overseas for September, and wouldn’t like to ship a desktop overseas (I’m currently a senior doing research, thus why I came to this sub.) I do have a friend who is a senior in computer science and hardware, so if you have any suggestions for modding a laptop to get it to work as well as a desktop, then I’m all ears

I decided to quit Youtube Music, and I finally enjoy listening to music again.

Like most of you, I got forced to migrate over from GPM, which I was very happy with. For the past few months I tried using Youtube Music, but the lack of library management options made it difficult to listen to music the way I have been for as long as I could remember.
Here's how I usually do it: I have large playlists (500+ songs) consisting of albums of loosely defined genres, and I shuffle the playlist I want to listen to, then save the shuffled queue as a playlist so I can listen to it across multiple devices and across restarts.
Youtube Music, with its lack of multiple select and saving queues as playlist, has completely destroyed this flow, and I noticed that I stopped listening to music simply because YM was making the experience miserable. A few days ago I got fed up and cancelled my Youtube Premium, and switched over to another (non-free) music service that had these features (and also fairly good mixes/radios).
I finally enjoy listening to music again now, so much more than with YM that I am willing to put up with the obnoxious Youtube adds again. If you are also suffering like me, try out some of the other services (they usually offer free trials), maybe you will find yourself enjoying music again as well.
EDIT: Fixed some typos.
EDIT: Since a lot of people kept asking, the other service was Tidal. I didn't want to make this post to promote one specific service, just to encourage unhappy users to try other music apps that have free trials. If you are interested specifically in what I liked about Tidal, check my comments in this thread :)

What are people using for a music app to play music stored on their devices? YouTube music is so bad for that. Any decent options?

Not to mention all my playlists got killed when I had to make the move. Also, it seems to do a terrible job at finding music that is on my phone.

Why does YouTube Music think this is acceptable? Whenever I 'Start Radio' on a song, I get the same artist literally every other song. Used to be a great feature in Google play and is not almost useless. If I wanted to shuffle the artist I'd just do that 🤦‍♂️

What's keeping you from leaving YouTube Music?

For me it's the ability to play YouTube videos, the fact that it's Google (wanna be in a single system).
Edit: oh Yeah YouTube Premium barely costs more than YouTube Music alone so I enjoy ad-free YouTube too

Youtube Music is terrible

I'm trying to download all my music from YouTube music directly to my phone so I can use ANYTHING else. But it appears I have to download the music one song at a time
Does anyone have any good fixes for this? Anything that grabs my music from the app and acts like a proper player?
I can't even organize my music in YouTube music, its fucking awful
Edit: OKAY Solution Found
I used went to Google Play Music on browser, and through it used Google Take out to download a zip file of all my music. I can now find a better application and delete youtube music forever. But not before leaving a 1 star review of course

Youtube Music does not play nice with Android Auto

I am experiencing an issue with YouTube Music and Android Auto. I have downloaded all of my playlists and turned off streaming over mobile data.
Sometimes (most of the time, actually), a song ends and the next song loads up and automatically pauses. If you press play nothing happens. Sometimes it won't even play the next song if you press next.
Does anyone know why this happens? I haven't actually tried any other music app as I mainly just use YouTube Music on Android Auto. I am using this on my 2019 Mazda CX-5. Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated!

YouTube Music Is Better Than Spotify

Hear me the fuck out. Because I’ve dug into this. And I’ve written basically an entire essay to back it up.
It seems like everyone is constantly debating Apple Music or Spotify and failing to see the highly underrated contender here: YouTube.
Apple Music is basically just the hypebeast equivalent to music streaming. It’s for users who have taste but only buy clothes with gaudy designer logos splashed all over them.
Tidal, band camp, and SoundCloud are all platforms for musicians listening to other other musicians. They pay the artist more but they’re limited platforms with just ok interfaces. And Pandora is literally just for radio listeners. To each their own. So I’m mainly focusing on Spotify vs. YouTube.
That said, Spotify pays its artists more per play than YouTube. But also Spotify is trying to create a digital payola where artists can agree to be paid less per play (aka pay Spotify) and their music would be prioritized in their algorithm. Which is problematic and borderline illegal.
Now I’ve been using YouTube since limewire bit the dust and everyone started illegally downloading music using YouTube and an MP3 converter. So keep in mind, I have a personal bias. This is an opinion so what did you expect? But I did try to be as impartial as possible.
Here’s the way I’ve broken it down: radio, interface, playlists, variety, and socializing.
As far as radio goes, I’d say they’re neck and neck. Their genre based radios are completely equivalent. Their artist/song based radios differ slightly but still equal. Spotify’s adding in more variety but YouTube’s algorithm bottle necking into the artists you already like and occasionally sprinkling in new artists.
I should say that I’ve always hated Spotify’s interface. But it’s been a few years and I didn’t want my historical bias to affect this so I downloaded Spotify and used a premium trial.
While it’s gotten much better, I still prefer the YouTube interface. The layout and homepage is more user friendly. YouTube’s library page is better sorted than Spotify’s. After a month of using Spotify, I also think the algorithm for YouTube is better. Which also makes the home and explore pages better.
A good algorithm lends itself to exposing you to premade playlists. If you’re a lazy music listener who likes playlists curated by others, Spotify has more niche playlists at your disposal. I believe that has more to do with the users on Spotify vs the algorithm, though (back to that later). YouTube Music has just as many premades, but they’re a little harder to find and not as hyper niche.
I personally like to find my own music and curate playlists. And for this, interface really matters. It is MUCH easier to build, organized, and prioritize your playlists on YouTube Music. For me, that’s what matters the most.
But sharing those playlists is harder. Because of the popularity of Spotify, sharing your own curated playlists can be a challenge. Most of my friends use Spotify. And the fact that it’s a different platform is an immediate turn off to them actually listening to them. So I often have to use Spotify to make them these playlists. And the main thing I’ve found is that Spotify just doesn’t have the same vast material as YouTube.
Which brings me into variety. You can access just about any version of any song covered by any artist on YouTube. On Spotify, you’re lucky to find a live version. YouTube has the defiant win here.
But Spotify has the defiant win with social ability. Alongside group listening and wrapped, Spotify has done a great job establishing its self as a musical social media platform. They are integrated with other platforms like Instagram and even Bumble. They know how to market.
And back to the hyper niche-ness of Spotify. Since Spotify has established itself as a musical social media platform, it has more individuals who use it as a way to express themselves. Which inherently means that there will be a uniqueness to it that YouTube Music won’t be able to match until they integrate those feature. But with YouTube itself already being a media sharing platform, I think that as their music platform grows that aspect will as well. But since this isn’t about speculation, I won’t account for that in my comparison.
Lastly, here is a price breakdown for your consideration: Spotify premium: $9.99 YT Music: $9.99
Spotify Share: 2 users at $12.99 ($6.49 per user) YT Share: 6 users at $14.99 ($2.50 per user or $7.49 split in half)
Added bonus: for $2 extra, you can also have YT Premium. Meaning no ads on YT videos.
In the full account, I will only be comparing single user pricing.
So after a month of using Spotify Premium, I’ve narrowed it down to this: YouTube Music delivers a better streaming platform for the individual experience of listening to music. While Spotify has focused itself in sharing the music you love with others.
So I summary (TLDR): Radio: tie Interface: YouTube Premade Playlists: Spotify Personal Playlists: YouTube Variety: YouTube Social: Spotify Price: tie Winner: YouTube Music
Now, if anyone who knows how to code/ build apps get this: an app that converts playlists from one platform to another. Since I still use Spotify to build playlists for my friends, I’d use the HELL out of this. Could also be beneficial to helping people switch platforms.
Edit: I should say this is a comparison of premium subscriptions. I was not taking in to account user experience without a subscription.
Also, a few people pointed out that Spotify also has a 6 person plan for $15
I’m sticking to my guns here, though. I don’t think these facts change much but they’re good to note!

Help: should I keep trying with YouTube Music, or should I find a new service?

Hi all,
I was a dedicated Google Play Music user for years. It's the reason that I started paying for a YouTube Premium subscription. Now I'm grandfathered into a lower monthly price ($9.99/month) and for that reason I've been hesitant to cancel even though I absolutely hate YouTube Music. I've been hoping that Google will fix a lot of my issues with it, including my biggest one which is that my playlists don't shuffle properly.
I have a playlist of about 700 songs and I hear the same 100 or so songs over and over and over. I have tried every trick that I have found by googling my problem, and I still can't get the entire playlist to shuffle. I often hear a song only to hear it again four or five songs later.
Shuffle is really important to me and I've done some searches that suggest this problem has been around for at least a year and has never been fixed. I've been hopeful that the problem will be fixed, but I'm beginning to lose hope.
I guess my question is: is it worth it to keep hanging onto my grandfathered-in monthly price on the off chance that Google will actually fix a lot of the problems that Google Play Music users are having with YouTube Music, or should I cut my losses and pay for a subscription somewhere else? And if so, what do y'all recommend?
As fellow GPM lovers, I hope that y'all can give some advice or guidance. Thank you!

So...YouTube Music kind of sucks?

So many of the subtleties make this a downgrade from GPM.
  1. Always in dark mode. I don't know why I find this annoying but I don't like it.
  2. Interface uses tons of white space, too much scrolling
  3. Can't individually select songs to ctrl or shift click
  4. Autoplay after the end of your queue plays really horrendous or seemingly random songs and videos
  5. Too much clicking around to get to your playlists.
Unfortunately, I also hate spotify because I think their queueing system makes no sense. Apple Music?

When it comes to the queue, YouTube music is vastly superior to Spotify.

The queue in Spotify has always been a big source of frustration to me. It looks boring since it doesn't have any album art, and it requires lots of button pressing to make changes to what's coming next. Most irritatingly of all, sometimes the song that appears next in the queue will not actually be the song that PLAYS next. In other words, you can't trust it, because it's buggy.
On the other hand, in YouTube Music, it's pretty effortless to reorder things on the fly. The album art also makes it more visually appealing. And it's easy to draw in tracks from different sources into one stream.
Beyond all these logical attempts to make my case, I would say after many months of being a subscriber to both services, I have had many more cases of getting into a good flow through my queue in YouTube music than on Spotify.

YouTube Music is absolutely terrible

It blows my mind how bad it is. It is basically worse in every single way to Googe Play Music. Even their whole "transition process" was completely botched. If you used GPM in order to play songs that were locally stored on your device, you got it even worse. The only thing that was actually transferred over was the title of my playlists and the contents of each were completely blank, despite the fact all of the music was still in the exact same place on the phone. Google could have easily made a system that kept playlist with locally stored songs from being nuked. I don't know how they managed to make it not only take over 10 seconds for your library to populate with locally stored music, but then when you attempt to play a song you are subject to another long delay. It's clear the only purpose of the app was to push people into getting YouTube Music subscriptions and basically zero effort was made to actually produce a better, more functional app. It's a shame that there are likely many people out there who haven't realized there are many far better music player apps on the app store and are stuck using this pitiful piece of software. I've moved over to PowerAmp at this point, but I cannot for the life of me understand how a company could create something like YouTube Music and then think, "yup, this is good, we should force all _______ of our GPM users over to this". GPM could have easily been left to just work as an app for locally stored music, it's really borderline malicious what Google did.
