  • Issues between Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon have reportedly reached an impasse and it looks as though Hogan may be gone from the company, just as his autobiography that WWE is releasing is scheduled to hit stores. There have been disagreements over the book, but the bigger issue is due to booking concerns. Hogan had initially agreed to come back a few weeks ago and work a program with Lesnar, leading to a match between them at Survivor Series. But just days before Hogan was scheduled to return, he backed out, apparently over not wanting to put Lesnar over again. Hogan's image has since been removed from the Smackdown opening credits. Vince is said to be handling this the same way he handled Austin's departure, which is essentially, "Fuck him. Keep moving forward, on to the next" and not really selling it. Hogan will continue to make a few previously scheduled media appearances to promote the book, which WWE booked for him, but otherwise, most of that promotional tour has been scrapped. The long-term plan was for Hogan to lose to Lesnar and that somehow leads to Vince vs. Hogan at Royal Rumble. That seems like it should be an obvious Wrestlemania match, but Hogan's contract expires before WM, so they weren't counting on that. Thus, Rumble. So that's kinda where things stand right now. Much like Austin, Hogan has decided to go home and WWE is now out another big star. Even the reasons are technically the same (refusal to job to Lesnar, although the circumstances are obviously different). Hogan's contract expires in February and he's interested in working some big money matches in Japan and doing a farewell tour in the U.S. that he would book and promote himself. AJPW and K-1 are doing a joint show next week and Goldberg will be there. They're interested in bringing in Hogan for it also and word is that Hogan's WWE contract might actually allow him to do it. There's talk that he has a unique contract that would allow him to work matches in Japan under certain circumstances, so WWE might not be able to stop him from doing the show next week. Hogan has been telling people this week that he's considering it, but he keeps wavering back and forth. And that's where things stand for now.
  • It was officially announced that Panda Energy has purchased a majority interest in Jerry Jarrett's NWA-TNA. This purchase has also settled the debate over who will be in charge creatively. Vince Russo had gone behind Jarrett's back and made a strong case to the Panda owners that he was the right man to lead the company. Jarrett himself had conceded that it looked like Panda was going to go with Russo. But this week, Bob Ryder and Jeremy Borash met with the Panda execs and made their case for keeping Jarrett in charge and it worked. As of this moment, Jerry Jarrett will remain in charge of creative. As a result, Russo no-showed this week's event and, for the time being at least, appears to be out of the company. TNA won't officially comment on Russo's status but did release a statement noting that Jarrett will remain "firmly in charge." However, much like WCW, the new owners can change whoever's in charge on a whim at any given moment. There's a lot of people who believe Russo will still end up in power if/when Jarrett fails to turn the ship around.
  • More details on the TNA sale: Dixie Carter, the daughter of Panda CEO Robert Carter, announced the ownership change to the employees and wrestlers at a big company-wide meeting. Jerry and Jeff Jarrett will remain minority owners but they essentially work for Panda now if we're being realistic. This deal is essentially just like WCW: a wrestling company owned by a large corporation with no wrestling experience. But WCW had the benefit of being owned by a television network. TNA is owned by an energy company that runs power plants (not the WCW kind). Under the new ownership, TNA made its first big move this week, purchasing commercials during WWE's Raw in more than 30 major markets. ECW and other minor promotions have tried this in the past and usually found it was a waste of money that didn't seem to yield results. This new deal keeps TNA alive for a little while longer, but they're still facing the same challenges: they're trying to get fans to pay money weekly to watch a second-rate product with a lot of unknowns and WWE cast-offs. And they still desperately need a TV deal because this sale doesn't change the fact that trying to run exclusively on weekly PPV isn't sustainable.
  • But make no mistake: this sale has saved the company. Remember back in late-Aug/early-Sept. when two episodes in a row were nothing but compilations of previous shows? That's because Jarrett had decided to fold the company. They were already done as far as he was concerned. But at that exact moment, the Panda negotiations started and they were positive enough that Jarrett decided to keep the company running a little bit longer to see if he could make the sale happen. And he did. But if the deal had fallen apart, Jarrett planned to close the company immediately. So this was the textbook definition of saved at the last second. Here's how bad things had gotten. TNA's original investor, HealthSouth, earmarked $1.6 million to help launch the company. But TNA blew through that money quickly and HealthSouth wouldn't invest more, and so Jarrett was keeping the company afloat with his own life savings for about 2 months. That's when he was about to throw in the towel and then Panda came along. TNA still doesn't have accurate numbers for what any of its PPVs have done, so it's hard to say what the true buyrates have been. But estimates are that they were losing $25-40k per show. The company had no television and a marketing budget of almost nothing, which made it impossible to attract new fans. So they were dying fast.
  • Long obituary for Edward "Yukon Moose" Cholak, who died at age 72 from a stroke. He was a big star during the 50s-80s. Big 400+ pound dude, back when that was rare in the business, and it made him a huge star in most of the territories he went to. He also wrestled Rikidozan in Japan in what is one of Rikidozan's most famous matches ever because they did an injury angle where Cholak injured his shoulder. It was the first injury angle Rikidozan had ever done and fans were horrified. It led to a couple of big rematches. Bunch of other stuff because Dave somehow knows everything about wrestlers I've never even heard of.
  • Former wrestler Brian Blair, of the Killer Bees, came just 4,000 or so votes shy of winning a nasty political race for county commissioner somewhere in Florida. Blair's campaign featured baseball star Wade Boggs (may he rest in peace) and Hulk Hogan in several of his campaign commercials. Blair pushed himself as a family man. His opponents pushed back, noting that Blair testified in the 1991 steroid trial about purchasing illegal steroids, among other things from his years in wrestling. His opponents also cited Blair's failed marriage to former WWF ring announcer Mike McGuirk and Blair allegedly assaulting fellow wrestler Doug Somers over his belief that Somers was having an affair with McGuirk. All this was used to essentially argue that Blair isn't the family values man he claims to be. Anyway, Blair lost, but just barely (I can't find any of these commercials).
  • "This has absolutely nothing to do with wrestling, but I feel the need to say a few words about my grandmother," Dave writes, before going on to give a brief, but sweet tribute to his grandmother who passed away just a few months before her 100th birthday. Awwww. Dave's mom is still alive too and in her 90s. Them Meltzers live a long time.
  • AJPW is expected to hold a Tokyo Dome show in January. The original plan had been for Goldberg to beat Genichiro Tenryu for the AJPW Triple Crown title, and then defend it at the Tokyo Dome against Keiji Muto. But Tenryu didn't want to do the Goldberg match (no interest in losing his title in a 5-minute squash) so they changed plans and had Muto beat Tenryu for the title. So now Muto is the champion and he may defend against Goldberg at the Dome instead (not quite what happens).
  • Dave saw the recent AJPW Budokan Hall show, which was essentially the end of the Giant Baba era of AJPW. Even though he died nearly 4 years ago, the company has remained synonymous with Baba. His picture still on the entrance curtain, representative of how he used to sit behind the curtain and watch all the matches at every show (so is this called the Baba Position in Japan?). But with Motoko Baba fully out of the company now, this was a sad show that symbolized the true end of the Baba era and the first step in AJPW becoming a new, more modern promotion. During the show, they had a list of the top 10 matches in AJPW history. And just so you know how deep the hatred for NOAH still runs, not a single match in the top 10 featured any of the former AJPW wrestlers who left to form NOAH. That's right. Not a single Misawa or Kobashi match made the list. In case you're curious, here's the top 10 AJPW matches ever, according to AJPW in 2002:
  • Baba vs. Bruno Sammartino (1972)
  • Baba & Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Funks (1973)
  • Tsuruta vs. Mil Mascaras (1977)
  • Funks vs. Abdullah & Sheik (1977)
  • Baba vs. Verne Gagne (1981)
  • Baba vs. Stan Hansen (1982)
  • Hiroshi Wajima vs. Tiger Jeet Singh (1986)
  • Tsuruta vs. Tenryu (1987)
  • Hansen vs. Toshiaki Kawada (1993)
  • A six-man tag on Baba’s birthday (1998) - Dave says this match actually did feature NOAH wrestlers, but they weren't mentioned or shown at all in the highlight video and it was only there because Baba was in it and this was Baba's last great match
  • AJPW's annual tag tournament is coming up soon. Reportedly, Muto was trying to bring in Sting to be his partner, but Sting was already booked for the WWA tour in Europe. Man, Sting and Muta teaming up in a tournament would have been awesome to me. Those 2 are what got me into WCW as a kid.
  • The guy playing the fake Great Muta in NJPW blew out his knee and needs reconstructive surgery. He's expected to be out at least 6 months. And that was the end of that dumb ass experiment.
  • Dave reviews a recent NJPW show and has a couple of interesting notes. American Dragon wrestled in a 6-man match and looked good but lacked charisma. Some people there are making comparisons to Chris Benoit when he wrestled in NJPW. Dave ain't going that far just yet but the kid has real potential. Also, Dragon was reportedly asked to cut his hair but refused. And then there was another tag match with Chyna and it was by far the best match she's had in NJPW and probably the best wrestling match Dave has ever seen her have. She did some great mat wrestling with Tanahashi and Dave says she's been training with Sean Waltman (they're dating around this time of course). But she was shockingly good in this match.
  • IWA-Mid South held a 2-night Ted Petty Memorial tournament that featured some notable names, including Colt Cabana, AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, Ken Anderson, Ace Steele, Chris Hero, MDogg20, CM Punk, and BJ Whitmer, among others. The tournament was won by Whitmer who beat Punk in the finals (what a damn lineup in retrospect).
  • WWE's CFO and two of its top marketing execs are out of the company. The details are being kept hush, but Variety magazine reported that they had been fired, not that they quit. Agusut Liquori, the CFO, was considered the #3 person in the company, behind Vince and Linda McMahon. These decisions were made so suddenly and unexpectedly that WWE didn't yet have replacements lined up. So right now, a couple of other WWE execs are filling those roles temporarily. Gee, this sure sounds familiar. These are the exact same roles that George Barrios and Michelle Wilson held. And earlier this year, they were also fired without warning, so suddenly that WWE didn't even have replacements lined up. When business starts to fall, that job is not safe.
  • When talking about future opponents for Brock Lesnar as a babyface, Dave lists Big Show, Kurt Angle, and Eddie Guerrero as possibilities. They're already doing the Big Show match, which is how they're turning Lesnar babyface. They're holding off on Angle probably until Wrestlemania. And Eddie Guerrero, Dave says "I can't ever see that as a PPV match." Boy oh boy, those words taste aren't gonna taste good going down in a couple years.
  • Dave recaps all the appearances of WWE wrestlers on the TV show Blind Date. Chris Nowinski, Linda Miles, Maven, Nidia, and Jackie Gayda. You can find most of these on Youtube if you search. They're entertaining. Nidia in particular just cuts right to the chase.
  • Notes from Raw: Nathan Jones worked a dark match and even though his in-ring work sucked, he got over big with the crowd. They seem to have reeled back big time on the Katie Vick angle, with only one mention of it the entire show, and that was just a throwaway Goldust joke. Seems Vince finally caved on this one and it appears they're dropping the angle. Jeff Hardy is losing weight and looks more burned out than ever. Batista is now being called Dave Batista. Test got a haircut. And that's basically it.
  • Goldberg gave another interview and talked about WWE. First, he questioned whether Scott Steiner's body would hold up to their schedule, but wished him luck. As for the Katie Vick angle, he said stuff like that is basically part of why he's not with WWE and he wouldn't want to be associated with that.

Early Wachowski Interview

One of the first interviews after the matrix
ILoveNatPortman: Can you give any information on the sequels, or even confirm their existence?
WachowskiBros: Yes, we are working on them right now. Well, we would be working on them right now except we have to be here in the chat room right now, LOL.
blindrocket: Do you practice Martial Arts?
WachowskiBros: No, we do not, but we watch a lot of Kung Fu movies.
AgentMartin: Why didn’t you both do the commentry on the DVD, time restraints?
WachowskiBros: That’s a two part answer. Part one is that we believe that film is a collaborative media, that’s why we never take a film by credit. We think the other artists who help create a film are important and interesting, and for people who want to understand the process of filmmaking. And the second part is, that we were too tired.
Hiryu: Which Anime inspired you the most and why?
WachowskiBros: We liked Ghost in the Shell and the Ninja Scroll and Akira. in anime, one thing that they do that we tried to bring to our film was a juxtaposition of time and space in action beats.
AgentMartin: Is there anything in The Matrix which you weren’t too happy with, wished you could have done differently?
WachowskiBros: That would require the rest of the chat to answer! But, we’ll answer that in general we’re fairly happy with the way it turned out.
blindrocket: Would you consider yourselves computer nerds?
WachowskiBros: You got the second part right, just nerds! LOL.
AgentMartin: Were you excited about DVD as a medium for your movies to go to the homes of the masses?
WachowskiBros: As a technology, DVD is exciting medium. But like all technologies, it still needs to be developed by the users of the technology.
Enigma: What is the role or faith in the movie? Faith in oneself first and foremost – or in something else?
WachowskiBros: Hmmmm….. that is a tough question! Faith in one’s self, how’s that for an answer?
Peter: Will the be a directors cut of the matrix with any deleted scenes or out takes?
WachowskiBros: Nope, nope!Because we were pretty happy with the way it turned out.
AgentMartin: The two of you seemed to have a great relationship together for the making of this movie. Have you always been very close?
WachowskiBros: We just met actually. Tonight!
Sentinel: What comic books inspired the look of the Matrix?
WachowskiBros: The largest influence from the comic book world on the actual design would be the art of Geof Darrow.
Revenge: What did the humans do to scortch the sky??
WachowskiBros: We’ll answer that question later.
larrikin: How long did it take to film in Sydney? was the entire movie shot in Sydney?
WachowskiBros: 118 days, and yes. [On the screen, Neo is climbing out the window following Morpheus’s `orders’…] Actually, this is Keanu Reeves actually getting out onto an actual ledge, without a stuntman. He does this entire scene without a stuntman, and it’s 34 floors up..
hokeyboy: Were the filmmakers influenced by Alex Proyas’s similarly themed “Dark City”?
WachowskiBros: No, but we thought it was very strange that Australia came to have three films associated with it that with it that were all about the nature of reality. Dark City, The Truman Show and The Matrix..
Enjoythesilence: How would you say Bound and the Matrix are similar?
WachowskiBros: Both films examine the idea of an individual searching for their true selfwhile attempting to escape the box that we often make of our lives.
calla: What do the time 9:18 and the date 9/18 signify? Is this a personal reference?
WachowskiBros: That’s my wife’s birthday.
Inge: How long did the lobby scene take to shoot?
WachowskiBros: It took 112 days to shoot the lobby scene… It took 12 days, not 112!.
dm8: do we set the video to 16×9 or 4×3?
Akira702: you guys are cool. do you know that you are cool?
cecilc: Have you seen any of the fan sites that out there regarding The Matrix? And are there any out there that you think particularly represent the film really well?
Inge: Which scene are you guys most happy with? Favorite? For me it. Neo on his way to Morpheus the first time.
WachowskiBros: If you’re talking about the pill scene, that’s our favorite too.
Sealouse: Why was it filmed in Australia?
WachowskiBros: Costs.
calla: There are quite a few hidden messages in the movie that I notice the more I watch it. Can you tell me about how many there are?
WachowskiBros: There are more than you’ll ever know.
Inge: Did you guys take a nice holiday after the film had open? You deserve it!
WachowskiBros: Thank you very much! And we did.
Sentinel: What do you think of the fans of the Matrix??
WachowskiBros: We love them.
ToiletCommando: Are you prepared to become legends?
WachowskiBros: Legends of what?
MadMatt: You guys BIG Jackie Chan fans??
WachowskiBros: Yes, we love a lot of Hong Kong cinema. Jackie Chan in Drunken Master II is fantastic..
Specter’s question, asked by TheTrinityACMXCL: What about the animals in the Matrix? Are they real animals or just computer-generated images?
WachowskiBros: Sadly, they are all computer generated images.
ToiletCommando: Is it true that you got some of your ideas from the Vertigo comic The Invisibles?
WachowskiBros: We do enjoy that comic, but no.
ThedrickFel: What exacty was the mirror made of? Was it the same stuff they injected into morpheus? Why silver?
WachowskiBros: The mirror is actually a mirror. When Neo sees it it’s a hallucination, but it’s the direct result of the pill Morpheus has given Neo. Reflections in general are a significant theme in the film. The ideas of worlds within worlds..
AgentMartin: Are you suprised by the amount of internet life that The Matrix has spawned, fan sites etc?
WachowskiBros: Surprised? Yes, very, surprised. We are very, completely stupefied by the fan response to the film. [On the screen, Morpheus offers Neo the choice of the two pills…] WachowskiBros: The idea of the reflection, the two Neo’s in Morpheus glasses, is that that represents the two lives that Neo is leading. In the left lens, we see the blue pill and Thomas Anderson, and in the right lens, we see the red pill and Neo..
Jose: What kind of drug does the red pill contain?
WachowskiBros: It’s like a computer virus that’s meant to disrupt Neo’s life signal so that they can pinpoint where Neo’s body is in the power plant..
Renxo: Which is your favourite flick?
WachowskiBros: Too many to answer.
unholyTrinity: When did you think about making this movie for the very first time? Was there a kind of special inspiration given by any event, occasion or something like that??
WachowskiBros: It all happened very rapidly. We were working on another comic book, and a friend asked us if we had any ideas for a new series. And we said no, and then we just started talking about a couple of ideas that we had been working on in connection to cyberpunk fiction. And, a whole idea sort of exploded, over a period of about three days.. [Before they actually responded above, the pod scene was playing on the screen so they commented…] WachowskiBros: We’re pretty happy with the way this scene turned out. Keanu did some amazing work in this scene which included 6 hours every morning of prosthetic makeup. And he had to sit in a freezing cold vat of goo for another six hours..
Renxo: Where were you born?
WachowskiBros: Chicago.
Neo479: What are some of your favorite films from Honk Kong?
WachowskiBros: I was very happy with the Don Davis score in this scene, that included his use of a boy soprano, which I thought was very eerie. Don had a great idea, to use human voices choir in scenes like the power plant and scenes on the Neb to sort of suggest the plight of humanity..
Doc: So, WAS the Japanese animation Megazone 23 an inspiration for the Matrix? The stories seem very similar.?
WachowskiBros: I’ve never seen it. But send us a copy, it sounds good..
theman: How did you guys come up with the idea for the matrix? Playing video games? Shock therapy?
WachowskiBros: No, designer drugs.
Starr22: Are all the religious symbolism and doctrine throughout this movie intentional, or not?
WachowskiBros: Most of it is intentional. [On the screen, Neo is about to be plugged in for the first time ever…] WachowskiBros: One of the things we tried to do with the Neb for when we were shooting “in the real world” was use long lenses to separate the humans from the backgrounds as opposed to when we shot the Matrix we used short lenses to place the humans in specific deep spaces. We also tinted all of the lights blue in the “real world” and green in the Matrix.
Renxo: Do you reflect your personality on NEO’s character? Were you/are you… hackers?
WachowskiBros: We’re probably not good enough to call ourselves hackers, like NEO.. [On the screen… Morpheus shows Neo the desert of the real…] WachowskiBros: There have been many questions about the history that Morpheus suggests in this scene, and we have written the history in a fair amount of detail, and we often have hoped that if we did an anime series, we would tell the story of this history and the story of the first One. Somebody asked us about the liquification of humans, that’s what they feed the people in the pods, the dead people are liquified and fed to the living people in the pods. Always recycle! It’s a statement on recycling..
White_Beezatch: Will there ever be a Matrix video game?
WachowskiBros: Hopefully yes. If things work out the way we want them to, the video game will be released when the next movie comes out, and it will actually have something to do with the movie.
DrBasher: Who came up with the wardrobe, because Trinity’s outfits rocked? So did Morpheus and Neo’s. Was it part of the original script?
WachowskiBros: We described her as a woman in black leather in the script. But, mainly the costumes were designed by Kym Barrett..
Chandler: Since you have worked with the same composer and cinematographer (the great Bill Pope) did you find that it was easier to think ahead about a visual or musical style for the film?
WachowskiBros: Did Bill Pope ask this question? No, but it’s easier to execute them. You develop a shorthand language with people you’ve worked with before. You tell Bill, we need a B move, and he knows what to do..
pomru: My friends and I are wondering what anime you showed the producers to get this movie greenlighted?
WachowskiBros: If only it had been that easy. We had to draw the entire movie and Keanu Reeves had to agree to do the movie before anybody green-lit it.
DrBasher: Also, the special effects rocked, was the script conceived knowing the special effects were available, or were the special effects conceived to make the script possible?
WachowskiBros: Some of the special effects had to be invented, mainly Bullet Time.
yellerdog: What are the odds of the Wachowski’s directing a “straight up” live action adaptation of an anime?
WachowskiBros: I thought we did.
DrBasher: How long did it take to come up with the script, because it’s great?
WachowskiBros: We wrote the script before we had even directed Bound. And had been working on it up until the time of production.
TGee: When did you first think you would have such a huge hit on your hands?
WachowskiBros: It kind of was like a giant art house hit, in that it just kept going and going and people kept talking about it, and there was never a moment where people were like “it’s huge”. People liked it, and it just kept going. [On the screen, Morpheus is fighting Neo…] WachowskiBros: This scene took fifteen days to shoot, and about four months of training…This is all Keanu, this is Keanu running up the pillar and doing the full airborne 360.
ToiletCommando: Are you going to do any projects besides the Matrix?
WachowskiBros: Maybe. If we’re still alive.
ToiletCommando: Is it hard to work as brothers? Don’t you disagree on everything?
WachowskiBros: Mom flies down to the set everyday to settle every one of our arguments.
BigMac: Rumor has it that Cypher is not dead….is this true?
WachowskiBros: If you ask Joey Pants, it is. Joey Pants started that rumor..
garrett: Isn’t it rather ironic that Morpheus and his crew are completely dependent upon technology and computers, the very evils against which they are fighting?
WachowskiBros: Yes! [On the screen, Morpheus’ jump makes Neo go `Whoa’…] WachowskiBros: That shot, where Morpheus jumps up out of frame, we called “The Worst Camera Operator Shot in the World”.
ooo: What is the Matrix?
WachowskiBros: About 2 hours and fifteen minutes long…Those doors are actually made out of wood.
spark: What made you decide on the green tint for being in the Matrix?
WachowskiBros: It was a whole motif inspired by the phosphorous green of old PC’s. [On the screen, Morpheus says, `Freeze it!’ in the Agent training program…] WachowskiBros: People don’t realize how important this scene is. Because we are all staring at the woman in the red dress! There’s actually twins and triplets that we hired in that scene. And all of the clothes are based on black and white costumes, like nuns, chefs, brides, sailors. We had the idea that Mouse just doubled people instead of making originals. But we couldn’t afford to do it digitally, so we ended up hiring as many doubles, or as many twins, as we could find in Sydney. It was kind of like a bad dream on the set.
grey: How did you get the money for “The Matrix”?
WachowskiBros: Begged. And the big-hearted Warner Brothers came through..
Stone: Would you like to direct Jackie Chan?
WachowskiBros: Sure!
Lyn: Have you guys been approached to direct Batman?
WachowskiBros: Yes, but we thought we’d be busy doing the sequels.
AgentMarr: The film’s cast was quite diverse and yet the issue of race was refreshingly not an issue on screen. How did you accomplish this?
WachowskiBros: We’re pretty happy with the way the sentinels turned out. The digital artist that John Gaeta found did some amazing work..
WachowskiBros: Cypher, at the beginning of this scene, is setting up an automated system to allow him to go meet with Agent Smith. EZGuest316: Could you say a little about the sound design which was terrific such as the slomo bullet ripple effects, foley effects?
WachowskiBros: Jane Davis is a genius.. ..Dane Davis is a genius. He built all of these sound effects from all kinds of original sounds. He’d put bullets on strings and whirled them around his studio, he digitized raindrops against windowpanes to create the sound of the Matrix code.. [On the screen, Cypher is enjoying the fake steak…] WachowskiBros: By the way, this steak was one of the best steaks we had in Sydney. We got to eat all of the ones that Cypher didn’t finish.
JediKnight: Have you been approached with any sci-fi scripts and do you have plans to do any?
WachowskiBros: Right now, we’re focusing just on Matrix 2 and 3.
Freethinker: Just out of curiosity, do you guys hold to any religious beliefs?
WachowskiBros: Non-denominational. [On the screen, the breakfast of champions…] WachowskiBros: Several of the cast members actually got sick eating this stuff during this scene..
Astral_Traveler: How did you choose the music?
WachowskiBros: For the most part, we chose the music ourselves. But we hired a consultant DJ in LA named Jason Bentley, a musical whiz kid, who had a lot of swell ideas..
JimmyEO971: Will Joe Pantoliano be the DeNiro to your Scorsese, the Divine to your John Waters?
WachowskiBros: There is a court order against Joe Pantoliano for coming within a hundred feet of us.
biggysmalls: How many bluescreen/greenscreen shots are in this movie?
WachowskiBros: That’s a good question. There’s 450 digital effect shots, but green screen? Probably about 125..
wrygrass: Did ideas from Buddhism influence you in making the film?
WachowskiBros: Yes.There’s something uniquely interesting about Buddhism and mathematics, particularly about quantum physics, and where they meet. That has fascinated us for a long time..
gdreams: Will you use Yuen Woo Ping again?
WachowskiBros: Hell yes!
gtbpitt: Do you think The Matrix will develop a cult following in the decades to come?
WachowskiBros: We hope it’s as big as the Night of the Lepus.
WachowskiBros: This is my wife about to be on the screen here. She comes in right there!…. This kid is great!
letmein: The phrase “paying taxes” comes up a few times. Why?
WachowskiBros: Because we usually couldn’t afford to pay ours. It is an examination of what is and is not certain.
Tank: I am a computer artist and I am very interested in knowing what type of computers and software you used to create the 3D effects?
WachowskiBros: A lot of the guys at Manex wrote their programs with Softimage. We think.. [On the screen… the Oracle] WachowskiBros: Awesome actress!
Wesbran: Is the title “The Matrix” related to the mitochondrial matrix located in cells; the site of cell respiration, the creation of energy in humans?
WachowskiBros: Like the movie itself, there is a lot of word play, a lot of hidden other meanings, a lot of multiple meanings. Besides that, we also like the definition, the mathematical definition of the use of matrix, or the use of it in terms of a woman’s womb.
DVDReporter383: Do you surf fan sites? Do you have the time?
WachowskiBros: We’ve looked at a few. There’s some cool ones out there.
virtualMatrix: What is the significance of Neo eating the Oracle’s cookie?
WachowskiBros: There was a piece cut out of the movie that explained the significance more. It’s hard to explain.
agunn3: Have you ever been told that the Matrix has Gnostic overtones?
WachowskiBros: Do you consider that to be a good thing? I would.
RockyMtnBri: Any chance of novels being written above and beyond the movie, like Star Wars?
WachowskiBros: Maybe.
Freethinker: The Matrix was very-well received by critics, as well. Did that surprise you/How much stock do you hold in critics?
WachowskiBros: There were some critics that really didn’t like it. Did it surprise us that some liked it? You don’t really hold much stock in critics, you tend to make movies for first, yourselves, and second, your audience. And the greatest thing about critics is that sometimes they can help find your audience.
AgentMarr: What was the thinking behind the use of numbers that can be read both ways like 303 on the hotel door where Neo meets his destiny?
WachowskiBros: Like the wordplay, there’s a lot of numbers play in the movie as well.
Mike: What were your fondest moments while filming The Matrix?
WachowskiBros: Finishing! [On the screen… the escape from Lafayette Hotel…] WachowskiBros: This scene, this set right here, the wet wall, is something like forty-eight feet high, and they are actually really worming their way down with wires..
DVDReporter383: Do you surf the net? If so, where do you go?
WachowskiBros: We’re everywhere.
linusa: Do you believe that our world is in some way similar to “The Matrix”, that there is a larger world outside of this existence?
WachowskiBros: That is a larger question than you actually might think. We think the most important sort of fiction attempts to answer some of the big questions. One of the things that we had talked about when we first had the idea of The Matrix was an idea that I believe philosophy and religion and mathematics all try to answer. Which is, a reconciling between a natural world and another world that is perceived by our intellect.
WachowskiBros: That was a hard stunt.
godbox: Confronted with Neo’s choice, which would you choose?
WachowskiBros: Blue pill.
Fuchikoma: What response did you get from established film-makers upon the Matrix’s release? Any unexpected phonecalls etc?
Lincoln: What comment do you have to those who say that the Matrix will probably be recognised as the first C21st film?
WachowskiBros: Well, first we’d be grateful for the comment. Then we’d have to point out the clerical error that it’s in the 20th Century, and not the 21st until 2001..
wrygrass: Did you do camcorder films or other film practice that helped you direct?
WachowskiBros: No, nothing on video, but we did fiddle around with 16 mm film.
Revenge: What is the symbolism of all the analog rotery phones?
WachowskiBros: There’s a couple of meanings. We liked the analog nature of older technology. We liked the suggestion of old original phone hackers. It sort of suggested the big Rube Goldberg device that’s in the mirror scene.
Inge: What was it like seeing the movie with a audience for the first time?
WachowskiBros: Terrifying. [On the screen… Morpheus & the agents …] WachowskiBros: That’s the largest translight ever constructed. (interesting fact) … That is actual mercury in the hypodermic needle, by the way. It was considered one of our most dangerous sets, because we had mercury, it had to be poured into the hypodermic needle.
Stone: Was the Alice in Wonderland theme just whim, or do you guys have a big love of it?
WachowskiBros: Big fan! It is a brilliant book. Many of the themes we tried to echo in The Matrix..
Orange_Crush: I noticed that The Matrix is currently #30 in the IMDB top 250.. that’s quite an achievement. How do you feel about being classified with other legendary films and filmmakers?
WachowskiBros: Lucky.
Wesbran: What happens to all the gadgets in this movie after it is done filming?
WachowskiBros: Most of them are so fragile they break as soon as you’re done filming. And Joel Silver collects the rest.
Sinclair: Why were they only able to jack in through hard-lines, but still able to communicate over cell?
WachowskiBros: Sinclair, good question! Mostly we felt that the amount of information that was being sent into the Matrix required a significant portal. Those portals, we felt, were better described with the hard lines rather than cell lines. We also felt that the rebels tried to be invisible when they hacked that’s why all the entrances and exits were sort of through decrepit and low traffic areas of the Matrix.
The12thMonkey: The guy that played the lead agent was worryingly convincing, did it take a long time to find him?
WachowskiBros: Yes, actually, and that was one of the fortuitous things about going to Sydney, is that it led us to find Hugo.
wrygrass: You said in an interview that string theory might show up in the film, did it?
WachowskiBros: Maybe in the next one, I have just now begun to understand string theory.
whatismyname: whats your favourite music?
WachowskiBros: We love all music.
ZEUS: How did you finaly choose the names of the characters?
WachowskiBros: They were all chosen carefully, and all of them have multiple meanings.
Qualopec: How hard was it to get the kind of budget you wanted for this film?
WachowskiBros: We had to go across the world to secure that budget.
wrygrass: Do you have any funny stories from filming you’d share?
WachowskiBros: That newspaper had to be actually a giant piece of metal with newspaper glued to metal pages. How’s that for funny?
Lincoln: What is your fave line in the movie?
WachowskiBros: Dodge this. And “there is no spoon.” We also liked that one.
Mahy: Do all of the things that happen in the Matrix have some computer-based analogy…or did you just do some of it because it was cool?
WachowskiBros: Yes. We like to try and pack as much stuff as we can in when we do a movie. So some of the stuff we do relates to the narrative, and some of the stuff we do because we like.
biggysmalls: Do you like the Planet of the Apes?
WachowskiBros: Yes, love it! “Get your damned dirty hands off, you stinkin ape!”.
Enigma: The character Neo: Is Neo his real self and Thomas Anderson who he is “required” to be?
WachowskiBros: Neo is Thomas Anderson’s potential self.
Job: Do you realize that your new ideas have changed the way people will see movies in the future?
WachowskiBros: Really? [On the screen, the agents have fallen… “Get up, Morpheus…”] WachowskiBros: The idea of Bullet Time came about because we wanted to shoot an event at incredibly high speed which means slow motion, but move the camera at regular speed, which is impossible. The first theory for Bullet Time involved a rocket camera that was abandoned for safety purposes. Then, John Gaeta suggested a digital solution. Which brought it to the screen.
keanucarrie: Which scene was the hardest to shoot?
WachowskiBros: The subway fight scene. It was incredibly cold and everyone was very sick and it went ten days over schedule. And was particularly brutal to the two actors..
Dogma: Has there been any discusions with comic book companies to publish a monthly-type of comic based on the Matrix, not just an adaptation, perhaps with Darrow illustrating it?
WachowskiBros: We’re going to release another series of stories on the website. Geof Darrow is going to illustrate a couple more short stories written by Andy and I. And, we’ve toyed with the idea of continuing the story in comic book form when the movies are finished..
Trinity303: Do you like John Woo’s movies and style of shooting scenes of action?
WachowskiBros: John Woo was a genius. John Woo IS a genius..
tonka: what do you think about star wars?
WachowskiBros: It was one of the first films that we went berserk over when we were kids.
kr: How long had you been working on writing the story and was there re-writing going on while filming?
WachowskiBros: There was not much rewriting, a little bit. Somebody asked us about the street names in the movie and all of them are significant. They are all based on places in Chicago.
Santayana: I love the casting of this film. Specifically, Hugo Weaving. Why him?
WachowskiBros: We had seen the movie “Proof” and we flew Hugo into LA to meet and he did a phenomenal reading. And was willing to undergo the four months of training. He’s one of the finest actors we’ve ever worked with. .
Hiryu: Did you ever consider doing a cameo appearance in the movie?
WachowskiBros: We’re too ugly! [On the screen…Neo faces off w/ Smith…] WachowskiBros: This shot here, the showdown shot, is an hommage to Sergio Leone.
joe: I am amazed by the physical performance the actors had great training. What do you think?
WachowskiBros: We’re amazed as well. We think all four of them went beyond our expectations.
Revenge: Any influence from Blade Runner?
WachowskiBros: Blade Runner was a benchmark science fiction film, a masterpiece. Of course there’s influence. But we were like the only guys who liked that movie when we saw it, everyone else hated it..
Freethinker: Did you know right away that it would be a trilogy?
WachowskiBros: We knew we had too much material for one movie.
inkman: Do you two feel that sci-fi is overlooked in the “Awards” arena?
WachowskiBros: We don’t put much credence in the “awards” arena.. [On the screen…Neo is fighting Smith…] WachowskiBros: There are some fantastic stunts in this sequence like THAT one! Both the Australian stunt team and the Hong Kong stunt team worked very well together in this scene.
AgentMartin: Do you appreciate people dissecting your movie? Do you find it a bit of an honour or does it annoy you a little, especially when the person may have it all wrong?
WachowskiBros: There’s not necessarily ever an “all wrong”. Because it’s about what a person gets out of the movie, what an individual gets out of the movie..
Vindicator: The whole idea of electronic stimuli of atrophied muscles is great. Did you guys consult any medical experts for accuracy?
WachowskiBros: As a matter of fact, one of our best friends is a doctor. He was the first guy to show us our first autopsy. [On the screen… the market shootout…] WachowskiBros: Watermelons, that was an hommage to Gallagher. On the TV, when Neo goes by there’s an episode of “The Prisoner”.
Action: Am I really watching the movie right now, or am I in…The Matrix?
WachowskiBros: Take another blue pill and call me tomorrow.
rawdogg: Why did you never show Zion?
WachowskiBros: We’re saving it for Matrix 2.
Nebelis: What other projects did the camerman work on and where did you find him?
WachowskiBros: If you mean Bill Pope, he did our first movie “Bound” and the masterpiece “Army of Darkness”.
Pill: Do you plan to write any books about this?
WachowskiBros: There is a “Making Of’ book that’s coming out later this year.
virtualMatrix: Do you believe one day, intelligent machines with AI will actually rule the world?
WachowskiBros: Yes. If they don’t already!
AcesAreWild: Who Invented BULLET TIME PHOTOGRAPHY?
WachowskiBros: The original concept was ours, but the technical execution was from a company called Manex.
AgentMartin: Many take the Make of the Neb, “Mark 3, V.11” and quote it from the bible “Mark 3:11”. Was this intended or is it just the make and model of the Neb and nothing more subliminal than that?
WachowskiBros: The Nebuchanezzer is indeed a biblical reference, from the book of Daniel.
linusa: Will you ever tell the history of the Matrix in a novel?
WachowskiBros: Maybe.
Renxo: Are you doing any personal presentations, anywhere?
WachowskiBros: No.
NIKKI: Who unplugged Morpheus and told him about the matrix?
WachowskiBros: We hope to tell that story in another medium one day.
Neotek: How much of an influence was William Gibson in the production and design of this movie?
WachowskiBros: We’re big fans of William Gibson’s work.
Ronin: Your movie has many and varied connections to mythos and philsophies, Judeo-Christian, Egyptian, Arthurian, and Platonic, just to name those I’ve noticed. How much of that was intentional?
WachowskiBros: All of it.
WachowskiBros: Sorry we could only get to 1 percent of your questions. We do appreciate all of your support. And we’ll see you in three years.

Set a goal of reading 20 baseball books this year. Actually finished 24.

Here we go, my list of 24 Baseball Books read in 2020, alone with a brief synopsis:
Hall of Fame:
Ball Four - Jim Bouton
So, so good. I'm sure it doesn't have near the impact today that it did back in 1970 when released but it holds up pretty well and more than any other book I've read made me actually experience what it must have been like to be on an MLB team. And not just any team, but the legendary 1969 Seattle Pilots. Anyway, Bouton basically kept a diary on his season, got it published, and he doesn't pull any punches. Got himself blackballed from the game as a result.
The Boys of Summer - Roger Kahn
This was actually a re-read as I first read it as a teenager and it is responsible for a large chuck of my baseball fandom. The book has two parts really, the author describes his childhood as a Dodgers fan and then the beginning of his professional career as a sportswriter covering the Jackie Robinson Brooklyn Dodgers.
Eight Men Out - Eliot Asinof
Detailed account of the Chicago Black Sox. Book does a good job of retelling the scandal, giving you all sides. In a story with players who throw a World Series, professional gamblers and degenerates, Charles Comiskey still kinda comes off as the bad guy. Common trend of the year - baseball owners are not good people.
A Day in the Bleachers - Arnold Hano
I am not a Giants fan by any means but I loved this book. Only book of the 24 on this list that I couldn't get through my library so I actually bought it because I had heard good things. They were right, excellent read. Premise is that Hano, a sportswriter and Giants fan, happened to be sitting in the outfield bleachers at Polo Grounds for the great catch by Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series. Author recounts the whole experience of the day with a particular wit and charm. I finished this book in less than a day, partly because it is fairly short, but also because I was engrossed.
BallPark: Baseball and the American City - Paul Goldberger
This book is right in my wheelhouse - ballparks, architecture, city planning, etc. Also, the Goldberger (correctly) abhors the 1970s trend of the big concrete donut multi-purpose stadiums that all looked alike so he scored big points with me. You really see how influential Camden Yards was and how the White Sox had really unfortunate timing (and a lack of imagination) when they replaced the Comiskey Park.
The Glory of Their Times - Lawrence S Ritter
Upon the death of Ty Cobb in 1961, the author worried that baseball history was being lost and started contacting old ball players and traveling the country to get oral histories from them. More or less only players from the Dead Ball era, which is fine except there is nothing from Negro Leagues or any of its precursors so it limits the voices that we do hear. The audiobook I got from the library was the actual taped conversations with the old timers and the author. I recommend this format. Great to hear the old stories of the guys who lived them in their own voices. A little more of the "players today aren't tough, wah wah" than I would like but overall really good stuff. Common theme - Walter Johnson was universally admired as a player and a person. Ty Cobb universally admired as a player and despised as a person.
Dynastic, Bombastic, Fantastic: Reggie, Rollie, Catfish, and Charlie Finley’s Swingin’ A’s - Jason Turbow
I got this book because the early 70s A's won 3 World Series in a row, yet I felt like I had never heard much about them. And that ignorance probably increased my enjoyment of this book as all the crazy shit with this team was totally new and incredible to me. Great cast of charactors, and just a totally different era in the game compared to today. A's Owner Charles Finley probably the biggest d-bag of any person in any of these books.
The Soul of Baseball: A Roadtrip through Buck O'Neil's America - Joe Posnanski
The author drives around with Buck O'Neil as he promotes the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City and advocates for great Negro League players to be recognized in the Hall of Fame. Anyone who watched Ken Burns' Baseball knows Buck O'Neil is a national treasure and this book helps who get to know him a little more. And America as well, perhaps.
The Hall of Very Good
Moneyball - Michael Lewis Okay, we all know about Moneyball. The movie did an incredible job at making a film out of this book. That said, the book is more informative and engaging still, at least to me.
Shoeless Joe - W.P Kinsella You've probably heard of the movie made out of this book - Field of Dreams. I don't usually go for baseball fiction books but this one is pretty good. Fun Fact: the Terrance Mann character (James Earl Jones) is actually J.D Salinger in the book. And he was pissed to be depicted in a work of fiction and the movie had to change that to avoid a lawsuit. Neat stuff.
Bang the Drum Slowly - Mark Harris Another baseball fiction book that I liked so I keep breaking my own rule I guess. A friendship between a cerebral pitcher and kind of a dimwitted catcher. The catcher is dying. Brian's Song for baseball, maybe? I've never actually seen Brian's Song. This book was made into a movie with Robert DeNiro as the catcher, but I've never actually seen it either.
The Echoing Green - Joshua Prager Investigative work uncovering the cheating scandal of the 1951 NY Giants. Old school sign stealing with binoculars and a wire buzzer. This was the year that the Giants came from way back to tie the Brooklyn Dodgers for the pennant and Bobby Thompson hit the Shot Heard Round the World in the playoff. All tainted though! Cause the Giants were cheatin'.
Game Six - Mark Frost Highlights the 1975 World Series between the Big Red Machine and the Boston Red Sox, particularly... Game Six. Often regarded as the greatest baseball game ever played. And it certainly was dramatic. That's the one that ends with the Fisk-waving-it-fair home run.
Clemente - David Maraniss Another book where I said to myself, I don't know enough about this subject, and my library had a book about that subject so I checked it out and I'm glad I did.
Hall of Pretty Good
Heart of the Game - S.L. Price A first base coach in a minor league game is hit by a batted ball and dies. Price does a bio of the coach, the hitter and minor league baseball as a whole. Well done book.
Bottom of the 33rd - Dan Berry Another book on the minor leagues, this one detailing a 33 inning game played about 40 years ago. Berry does a good job of making an interesting story out of a long, bleak game.
Mickey and Willie - Allen Barra Dual biography of the parallel careers of the two great centerfielders. Probably better biographies out there of each man, but if you would rather read one book than two, here ya go.
The Kid - Ben Bradlee Biography of Ted Williams. Is there a dual biography of Williams and Joe DiMaggio? My library didn't have one and I didn't look further. This is a pretty good bio of Ted though. His son, barf.
Replacement Level Books
The Big Fella - Jane Leavy
The Matheny Manifesto - Mike Matheny
Just Show Up - Cal Ripken Jr
Wherever I Wind Up - R.A. Dickey
More Than A Season - Dayton Moore
Hall of Shame
Astroball - Ben Reiter
------ Edit - The R.A. Dickey book is actually pretty good. I don't go for the Christian stuff but he's not preachy about it at all and pretty honest about his own faults. Dude had some crazy bad stuff happen to him growing up too. Anyway, I assumed the book covered his Cy Young award winning season but it was actually written and published before that happened. So, when I finished the book, I was disappointed to not read about that. Pretty crazy that R.A. Dickey got a book deal before that season, if you think about it.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Most of you know the homie SaintRidley has been recapping the Observers from the 1980s (and if you don't know, now you know). Anyway, he got blasted by storms in Iowa the other day and has intermittent internet and asked me to pass along word that he won't be able to post the latest issue of the 1988 Rewind this week. Hope everything's okay with ya dude!

  • Dave opens the issue with some high praise, a rare thing for the top story. But this week's episode of Raw was the first time WWE showed real effort in months, with a clear plan to build a Raw vs. Smackdown storyline and to make the brands as distinct as possible. Raw felt like a completely new show, starting multiple new storylines that hint at long-term booking (we're so used to WWE disappointing us nowadays that it's kinda cute to go back in time and see someone buy into the false hope of improvement like this). They also had a super hot crowd, which helped a lot. The ratings also saw a spike this week, due to fans wanting to see what Raw looks like with Bischoff in charge. The announcers were moved away from ringside and stationed near the stage, similar to the old Nitro set. During the matches, the arena was darkened to give it a more old-school feel. Things felt more spontaneous and less predictable than they have in ages. The European title was done away with, unified with the IC title. Dave feels the belt was useless the last few years anyway.
  • The show featured DX reuniting, but ended with Triple H turning heel and giving Shawn Michaels a pedigree. Dave expects it to lead to Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels at Summerslam, but we'll see. This also necessitated Triple H moving back over to Raw, and in exchange, they moved Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman over to Smackdown at the end of the show. Eddie Guerrero had a match with The Rock and also had a segment where they went back and forth on the mic. It was the most confident Eddie has ever been on the mic and he held his own with Rock and came out of the night looking to be a bigger star than ever. The show wasn't all good though. They had a segment where they put D-Lo Brown and Shawn Stasiak in the ring and Bischoff berated them for being boring and buried them for trying to wrestle, which Dave thinks sucked. The DX reunion followed by Triple H's heel turn blew through potentially weeks of storyline progression in only one hour, but that's typical these days. But Dave thinks of all the potential revenue they could have made on DX merch if they'd been given a chance to have even a short few-week run, but alas. He also thought the announcers playing dumb (like Jim Ross having to pretend not to know who the Island Boyz were during their debut, despite the fact that he's written about them a million times in his weekly WWE.com column). Also too much backstage stuff, which is fine for TV, but sucks for the live crowd when they bought tickets to watch half the show on the TitanTron. But overall, it was the best Raw in a long time and the first sign that maybe WWE's latest reboot is going to mean real change. And that's the top story. Raw was actually good for once and it's the biggest news of the week.
WATCH: Triple H turns on Shawn Michaels - 2002
  • daprice82 Editor's Note: No one is going to care, but I have a story about this Raw. At the time, my girlfriend (now-wife) and I were in Peoria, IL for the 2nd annual Gathering of the Juggalos! We were 19 years old and drove there from Memphis in my shitty ol' Chevy Blazer and spent the weekend woop-wooping it up. Well, that Monday afternoon, we left Peoria to drive home. We got maybe 30 miles out of town when I realized that my previously full gas tank was almost empty. Pulled into a gas station, confused, but filled the tank again, and drove on. Watched the tank slowly drain as I drove along and within 30 minutes, I was on E again. I was losing gas somehow. Pulled off an exit and stopped at the single nicest truck stop I've ever seen. This place had everything. It was a gas station, connected to a Subway, with a lounge area that had recliners, full showers, washers and dryers, etc. If you're gonna be stranded somewhere, it was the best option. I ended up calling my dad and he drove 7 hours to come pick us up. So while we waited, my girlfriend and I spent the rest of the day into the night, hanging out in this lounge, sleeping in the recliners, and watching TV. And low and behold, they had the TV on Raw that night. I remember I was dozing in and out and I remember waking up when I heard the DX music hit and groggily staring at the TV like "wtf?" And then I saw Triple H turn on Shawn and was like "Whoa!" and then I fell back asleep and that's all I remember.
  • WWE announced that it's re-evaluating its quarterly and annual business efforts due to lower-than-expected revenue this year, stemming from PPV buyrates and live attendance plummeting. To keep the company in the black, WWE is making $20 million in budget cutbacks. Most of the cuts are coming from administrative expenses, but the developmental program is going to be hit hard (more on that in a bit). For next quarter, WWE is predicting an overall profit of $1.5 to $2 million. But that is a bit misleading because that figures in the $3.5 million settlement from the PTC lawsuit. If not for that settlement, this quarter would be the first money-losing quarter since 1997 (assuming you don't count the Q1 of 2001, when they had all the massive XFL start-up costs). Plus, they're running twice as many house shows now than they were the same quarter last year, and the numbers are still that bad. There's a ton of year-to-year comparisons here, which is super fun if you're a numbers person but TL;DR - business ain't great.
  • So what about Japan? Business there is an interesting story also. NOAH has surpassed NJPW in average attendance per show for the first half of 2002, which shows just how staggering of a collapse NJPW has had. The biggest success story of the year has been AJPW, which was on death's door a little over a year ago, with the entire roster jumping ship to form NOAH and the company lost its television deal. It's a miracle they survived at all, much less become as hot as they have this year. The reason, of course, is Keiji Muto (and to a lesser extent, Satoshi Kojima), both of whom jumped ship from NJPW at the beginning of the year and immediately gave the promotion a huge shot in the arm, spiking live attendance by nearly 70% and tripling merch sales. Meanwhile, NJPW is still stinging from those losses, plus they ran Riki Choshu out of the company, made Tadao Yasuda IWGP champion which was a huge flop, they have no good foreign talent, their junior division is stale as can be, and current champion Yuji Nagata is still trying to get his momentum back after a humiliating MMA loss to Mirko Cro Cop on New Year's Eve.
  • So about those developmental cutbacks. WWE cut ties with Les Thatcher's HWA promotion and also dropped the contracts of several developmental stars there. Among the names cut: Steve Bradley, EZ Money, Jon Heidenreich, Mike Sanders, BJ Payne, Horace Hogan, and several others you probably never heard of. HWA wrestlers Lance Cade and Charlie Haas are being reassigned to OVW, which will now be WWE's only developmental territory. Others, like Shannon Moore, Victoria, and Barry Buchanan are expected to debut on the main roster soon and were kept. In 2001 fiscal year, WWE spent $1.1 on developmental costs and had relationships with 4 promotions: HWA, OVW, UPW, and IWA Puerto Rico. Now we're down to one, with Jim Ross reportedly ordered to cut that developmental budget in half. Dave doesn't like this. With WWE being the only game in town and in need of new stars more than ever, he feels they should be expanding their developmental system rather than shrinking it. Creating new stars is vital to the future of WWE and limiting themselves to one promotion with a pool of only a dozen or so people seems short-sighted. He also disagrees with some of the people who got cut. Not everyone in developmental is going to be a star, but some of them at least deserved a shot (namely Steve Bradley, who had been there for 3-4 years, is still in his twenties, is a good worker and strong promo, but never got a chance on the main roster because he doesn't have the right look). Why some of those people were released while Jackie Gayda and Chris Nowinski are stinking up the ring on Raw is beyond Dave. He also thinks Les Thatcher had a pretty impossible job. He was given a roster full of wrestlers that were mostly leftovers from WCW. Young guys who came out of WCW's Power Plant and worked a fast-paced WCW style that doesn't apply to modern day WWE. Then they had Thatcher, Danny Davis, and Jim Cornette train these guys. A bunch of old school veterans training these young guys in the ways of 80s wrestling. So now they learn a whole new style....which also doesn't apply to modern day WWE. It's a broken system. Anyway, everyone who was cut has 90-day non-competes. Word is TNA is only interested in Mike Sanders, out of the names released.
  • WWE Vengeance is in the books headlined by one of those classic matches that can single-handedly make a show. The Rock defeated Kurt Angle and Undertaker in a triple threat match to become the first 7-time WWE champion, although Angle was clearly the one who had another star-making performance. Dave nitpicks the fact that Rock pinned Angle (rather than the champion Undertaker) to win the title, but he'll wait and see if it leads to anything storyline-wise first before criticizing it too much (it leads to nothing, turns out it was just a cheap way to get the title on Rock without Taker having to do a job). But it was an excellent match that gets 4.5 stars. Most of the other matches were good too, though some of the booking was weird and doesn't seem to make long-term sense. They teased a feud between the Raw and Smackdown announcers, which Dave thinks is fine so long as it stays verbal. None of us needs to see Jim Ross or Michael Cole in matches. Dave also gives Tazz credit for improving greatly in his commentary role over the last year. He sucked when he first started but he's the best color commentator they got now. They had the first face-to-face meeting between Angle and Lesnar, which is a subtle tease to what Dave expects to be a big time feud in the future. John Cena pinned Chris Jericho in a match that exposed how green Cena still is and Jericho wasn't able to carry him to anything good and the crowd couldn't have cared less about the rookie. RVD beat Brock Lesnar by DQ to retain the IC title. RVD was super over since they were in Michigan. Bad finish but I guess they didn't wanna give Brock the IC title since he's almost definitely winning the world title from Rock in a month. There was a forever long segment with Bischoff and Stephanie trying to woo Triple H to sign with their respective shows. Anti-Americans won the tag titles from Edge and Hogan. That's basically it.
  • We have a section called "Treatment of Minorities Within Pro Wrestling" by Todd Martin (presumably the same Todd Martin from the PWTorch?). The piece touches on wrestling's past portrayals of race and the false impression that things have gotten better due to the success of people like The Rock, when in reality, the racism is just more subtle. Martin takes a look at WWE's hiring processes. Very few minorities have come up through the developmental program, but it's hard to say if that's WWE's fault. Maybe there's just not many minorities trying to break into the business that way, there's no statistical evidence either way. But you can look at the wrestlers they chose to hire from WCW and how they fared in the WWE system. Midcard comedy wrestlers like Shawn Stasiak got a chance but not midcard comedy wrestlers like Norman Smiley. Nepotism got Horace Hogan a contract, but it didn't do anything for Stevie Ray. Examples like that. Or the Luchadores. Martin argues that, with all the talented Hispanic wrestlers WCW turned into stars, it's inexcusable that so few of them have even gotten so much a developmental offer from WWE. And the only ones who did were the ones fluent in English, which you can argue for. Can't argue size either. Someone like La Parka dwarfs over Crash Holly or Spike Dudley, but WWE has no interest. Wrestlers like Psicosis, Juventud, La Parka, Silver King, and others helped carry WCW through some of its most successful years and none of those guys even got a glance from WWE. Martin asks if Booker T's current jive-talking gimmick is any better than his early GI Bro or Ebony Experience gimmicks? Especially when they have him on TV hotwiring cars and doing stereotypical criminal shit like that? In regards to Eddie Guerrero's current Mexican stereotype gimmick, even Jim Ross recently said that it's taking Hispanic relations back 25 years. If the Booker T or Guerrero characters were portrayed on a normal network TV show with a majority-white cast, they would be seen for the racist caricatures that they are. Martin ends the piece by saying he doesn't believe WWE's decision makers are overtly racist. It's just that the company has created a hierarchy of implicit beliefs about how different types of people are portrayed and they may not even realize that they've built such a system.
  • Dave adds his own "editor's note" to the end of this piece and says he chose to publish it because of the detailed research and data used and found it a fascinating article that deserves discussion. Dave disagrees with some of it though and argues that some of it is just a difference in philosophy. For example, WWE tried the Lucha Libre experiment before with the Superastros show and crowds were dead for it. WWE and WCW had very different fanbases and presented different products because of it. So it may not be so much racism in that case as it is WWE fans have never shown any interest in that style of wrestling. He also argues against some of the examples Martin used (for instance, Stevie Ray was considered by WWE but he was already in his 40s and was never the caliber of worker as his brother, which is why they passed). But that being said, Dave thinks other parts of the piece make some interesting points that are well worth a read.
  • TNA week 5 felt like a whole new product due to the heavy influence of Vince Russo. We'll get into that later, but for now, buckle in, we've got a few paragraphs of TNA drama to get through. The first 4 shows presented a product with an emphasis on hard work and long-term angles. This week featured the classic Russo recipe of crash TV and constant, edgy swearing, in an attempt to market "to that 15-30 age group male demo that hates women because they can't get dates and enjoys seeing them harassed and abused." The show ended with a big injury angle to Scott Hall, which is all well and good and might get people interested in next week's show, except it came on the heels of multiple other "serious injury" angles during the same show and by the time Hall did it, it was something like the 3rd stretcher job of the night and it felt meaningless. Same with every promo being filled with curse words. The whole show was yet another example of why Vince Russo needs someone to filter his worst instincts. In this case, that should be Jerry Jarrett, but he was away from creative dealing with budget and legal issues all this week (gonna hear a LOT more about that soon). On that note, just based on very rough, preliminary PPV buyrate figures, production costs, etc. Dave estimates this company is already about half a million dollars in the red, and that's not counting the significant startup costs they have yet to recoup, with estimates that the company is currently losing about $120,000 or more per week.
  • As of this week, TNA's budgets have been slashed. They've also moved tapings to the smaller and cheaper Nashville Fairgrounds location and signed a 3-month lease. It's reported that switching buildings will save $27,000 per week. They're also eliminating pyro, cut new deals with the production crew, and will be flying in fewer stars, relying mostly on people that can drive. They also don't plan to use managers, will cut back on the TNA girls, and will be using Ken Shamrock and Scott Hall on alternate weeks, since they're the two highest paid guys and it's expensive to have them both on the same show. The Fairgrounds building has been used for wrestling tapings before and never looks good on TV, but TNA is insisting they can dress it up to look good. The budget cuts are expected to be so heavy that TNA's new break-even point for PPV buys will be 20,000 per week instead of 50,000. Dave thinks 20,000 is a much more attainable goal, but if it comes at the expense of the product looking minor league and low budget, it's gonna fail. The building also has no air conditioning and with TV lights, it's going to be brutally hot during summer months. Jerry Jarrett has been posting frequently on the wrestlingclassics.com message board and admitted that they weren't anywhere close to the 50,000-buys-per-week they needed. Here's a post Jerry wrote explaining their plans for the company and the new, Russo-iffic direction:
Jeff (Jarrett) and I are wrestling purists just as many fans here. The difference is that we have put up everything we have in our effort to present an alternative to sports entertainment. Our plan was simple. We believed that there were 50,000 wrestling fans who would pay $10 per week, or $40 per month to have an alternative to sports entertainment. This was based on the fact WWE has from 300,000 to one million fans of sports entertainment who will pay $35 per month to see their product. We were well aware that production values, talent, storylines, content, etc. were all factors that could negatively effect the buy rate. We still thought the market would support us enough to make the plan successful. We are finding that many of the wrestling purists did exactly as I did ten years ago, and that is, go on to something else. We are finding that there are many fewer fans who really want an alternative to sports entertainment than we anticipated. Therefore, we can either attempt to attract a few of the WWE fans, or pack up and go home. We have risked everything in our venture. Therefore, not because of our personal taste, but out of necessity, we are compromising our wrestling purist instincts and attempting to create a broader fan base. ECW did a great job of creating a product for the hardcore wrestling fan. The simple fact was that the base of their fans was not sufficient to keep them in business."
  • Ray Gonzalez, one of the top stars in Puerto Rico, shockingly announced he's leaving WWC and most expect him to jump to IWA. Gonzalez claimed WWC was late in paying him, which he says breached his contract (reportedly paying him $800-$1000 per week). As a result, his lawyers sent WWC a letter saying because of this, he was quitting the company. Gonzalez no-showed WWC events this weekend. This is going to badly hurt WWC's upcoming Anniversary show because Gonzalez was a major part of multiple top angles that the card was built around. Gonzalez has been the top heel in WWC and arguably has kept the company alive the past 5 years, and is most responsible for getting Carly Colon (Carlito) over as a big star. IWA has already started advertising a mystery wrestler to be the top heel in upcoming shows this weekend, and it's no secret that Gonzalez is expected to debut for the company and be that guy. Dave also mentions several other WWC wrestlers who no-showed events last week because they were late in being paid. Many of them are as much as 10 weeks behind on pay, but this week, they were summoned to the office where Carlos Colon paid them about 5 weeks worth of what they're owed. Lots of death-of-ECW vibes going on here lately.
  • Lots of rumors that AJPW star Genichiro Tenryu will be showing up at the NOAH show this week to challenge GHC champion Yoshinari Ogawa. Needless to say, this would be a big deal if it happens because AJPW and NOAH basically hate each other. No word on whether this is an angle or not, but given how much Motoko Baba hates NOAH, it seems unlikely. Of course, it also remains to be seen if Tenryu will even show up or if it's all just rumors. Tenryu is currently feuding with Muto over who should have become president of the company, so this could be just a kayfabed angle to make it look like Tenryu is really anti-AJPW (looks like it was just a work, he doesn't end up going to NOAH until 2005).
  • Dave recaps AJPW's latest Buddokan Hall show, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the company, which featured Keiji Muto wrestling 3 different matches under 3 different gimmicks. All told, Muto worked a total of about 36 minutes between the 3 matches and was banged up like hell the next day. There were also a lot of old legends on the card, like Abdullah The Butcher, Mil Mascaras, Dos Caras, and more. Stan Hansen and Motoko Baba came out to give speeches about the company, with Ms. Baba breaking down crying when talking about her husband, and more. I managed to find most of this show on Dailymotion, enjoy:

  • While we're on the topic, Dave saw a recent AJPW match with Tenryu defending the Triple Crown title against Satoshi Kojima in a match that many are calling the match of the year. Dave saw it and gives it 4.75 stars and calls Kojima possibly the best wrestler in the business when it comes to carrying the audience on an emotional roller coaster ride. He doesn't agree or disagree that it's the best match of the year, but he sure loved it.

  • Mitsuharu Misawa suffered a dislocated shoulder in a recent match. Popped it back in, worked the next day, still in pain, went to the hospital because that's what happens when you wrestle again right after dislocating your shoulder. Anyway, the doctors were like, "Hey, maybe don't do that for a minute" but he's Misawa so he vows he won't be missing any dates and then he hit the doctor with an emerald flowsion. Dave doesn't say this, I'm just assuming.
  • NJPW continues to decline. They held back-to-back shows at the 10,500-seat arena in Sapporo this week. The first night only drew 4,100 fans which was the smallest crowd they have drawn in that city in years. Second night was better, but still only 6,000 fans to see Yuji Nagata retain the IWGP title over Bas Rutten. In another era, this win would have been huge for Nagata but nobody cares when a wrestler beats an MMA guy in a worked match anymore because Inoki pretty much beat that horse to death.
  • There's talk of bringing back Chyna to work the August Tokyo Dome show for Antonio Inoki's UFO MMA promotion, presumably just to make an appearance (oh, if only). There's also talk of bringing her in for NJPW's September tour and having her beat male prelim wrestlers every night. Needless to say, there's a whole lot of people in the company against that idea. Especially because her loss to Joey Buttafuoco in a celebrity boxing match a few months ago actually got a lot of coverage in Japan, so coming off that and showing up to beat male NJPW wrestlers isn't a popular idea. But Inoki gonna Inoki, so we'll see.
  • Latest on the ECW bankruptcy proceedings. The trustee has filed a motion demanding that the InDemand PPV company pays them $724,456.40. That total is the money they owed ECW, minus $25,000 because ECW failed to produce the March 2001 PPV they were contractually obligated to produce. This case is a textbook example of why trying to run a PPV-only company like TNA is going to be so difficult. InDemand is still holding onto ECW PPV money from over a year ago. Anyway, of the $724k, a big chunk of it will go to attorneys, back taxes, commission fees, etc. Video game maker Acclaim, who owned a percentage of ECW, is expected to get a big chunk as well. Whatever is left over will be used to pay off existing creditors but there's not gonna be much. A lot of those creditors are just never going to get paid. It's also expected that Acclaim will end up owning the video tape library rights, since WWE hasn't yet made a bid to acquire it.
  • Former Crockett/WCW wrestler Chris Champion suffered a major stroke and is in critical condition. Champion also wrestled as Yoshi Kwan for a bit in WCW. A lot of people expected him to be a major star in the 90s, but it just never panned out, usually due to his own personal issues (I looked it up, he ended up surviving this go round, but he died in 2018 after suffering more strokes).
  • If you're wondering what Jim Crockett Jr. is up to these days, he works in real estate in Dallas. When Shaun Assael interviewed Crockett for his book on Vince McMahon, everyone in Crockett's office was shocked because they had no idea that their coworker was once the 2nd biggest wrestling promoter in the U.S. throughout most of the 80s. That's how much he's left the wrestling business behind.
  • Just gonna paste this quote here: "For whatever this is worth in case this becomes a major historical question down the line, the actual idea to make David Arquette WCW champion came from Tony Schiavone." Dave notes that Schiavone didn't have any decision-making power to make it happen, but he was the one who made the suggestion at a production meeting. According to those there, when Schiavone made the suggestion, Vince Russo's eyes lit up like it was the best idea he'd ever heard and the rest is history. (Vince Russo has confirmed this story himself. Last I heard, Tony admits he was involved in coming up with the idea but he refuses to take sole credit for it).
  • The Chicago-Sun Times interviewed Greg Gagne's son JP who is a pitcher for Notre Dame. In the interview, he talked about how famous wrestlers used to stay at his house all the time growing up and said that his friends love the story of how he once rode Space Mountain at Disney World with Ric Flair. Hehe.
  • Shane Douglas is now the booker for XPW and is involved in an angle where owner Rob Black's wife Lizzie Borden is leaving him for Douglas (don't get too close to her Shane, you might lose a thumb! More on that in a couple weeks...). Also, at the first show with Douglas as booker, there was a scaffold match where Douglas came out and shot the guy on the scaffold with a tranquilizer, causing him to plummet to the ring below, which then exploded. Don't worry, I wouldn't write all that without having a video for ya:
WATCH: Shane Douglas XPW tranquilizer gun scaffold spot
  • Notes from TNA PPV Week 5: Sabu debuted to face Malice in a surprise ladder match. It was fine. Sabu won, which earned him a contract to face Ken Shamrock for the NWA title next week in another ladder match. Don't worry, we have more ladders to come. Jeff Jarrett is being booked like the Stone Cold of TNA and Dave ain't here for it. Francine and Jasmine St. Claire had a shower scene together backstage, later leading to Jasmine in a wet t-shirt. K-Krush cut a promo complaining about being fired by WWE, just in case you weren't aware that most of this roster is full of WWE rejects, they make sure you know it. A 4-way match with a bunch of the young guys completely fell apart with everyone except Christopher Daniels looking totally lost and confused. Dave says rarely do matches even in OVW fall apart as badly as this one did. Another little person match that Dave says was one of the worst matches of the year and was highlighted by one of them breaking a watermelon over the other's head. Negative 3 stars. Even worse, the match went waaaay longer than it was supposed to, which cut into the time for AJ Styles vs. Low-Ki and a match that should have been great ended up being a huge disappointment. Plus a drunk guy in the crowd took away everyone's attention and they couldn't get the audience back. Jerry Lynn attacked AJ with a ladder afterwards because whooohoo ladders! Francine and Jasmine ripped each other's clothes off like every other time you've seen it in WWE. Then Blue Meanie DDT'd her and she did a stretcher job. Brian ChristopheLawlewhatever he is this week cut a long promo trashing his father to continue getting fans interested in a match they can't possibly deliver. Why not just challenge Austin or Rock while you're at it, Dave wonders. Fuck it, if you're gonna do dumb shit, at least go big. Scott Hall vs. Christopher in the main event was bad because Hall just returned from working IWA in Puerto Rico for several days and was pretty much on a drunken bender the whole time. And then Hall did a stretcher job to end the show, which was kinda lessened by Francine having done the same thing 30 minutes earlier. And there we go. After only 5 shows, this shit is already WCW 2000 all over again.
  • Despite all the publicity they got, TNA also barely made any mention of the angle last week with the Tennessee Titans football players. Apparently the players caught some shit from the Titans GM for it and since they aren't coming back and they can't do a match or anything with them, TNA decided to just forget it happened.
  • In case you're wondering why TNA hasn't made a play for Scott Steiner yet, apparently he and Jeff Jarrett had been friends for years, especially during the WCW days, but they recently had a falling out of some kind. Hence, TNA has no interest in using him.
  • The reason WWE is running back-to-back tapings for Raw and Smackdown next month in Seattle is to test the market. WWE did a site check last month at Safeco Field for next year's Wrestlemania, but there's question as to whether the Seattle market will be able to sell out a big stadium like that, so the decision was made to do this. If they have a double-sellout both nights, that'll pretty much guarantee that Seattle gets Wrestlemania. If the shows do poorly, they may reconsider and select a new city (I guess these shows end up doing okay).
  • The Rock is set to star in another major movie, this time a $100 million budget production based on the video game SpyHunter. The hope is to have the movie out around Christmas 2003, in order to cross-promote it with the new video game coming out around that time. This adds more to Rock's Hollywood plate and it's looking like he's going to be around wrestling even less next year (this movie ends up stuck in developmental hell for years and never gets made, but Rock ends up doing the voice for the video game in 2009 instead).
  • Dave isn't sure why yet, but the long-planned Hogan vs. Vince match at Summerslam is now off. Dave suspects they may be holding off until Wrestlemania, which is great if they have a long-term plan and now that they're doing the Bischoff vs. Stephanie storyline, Vince is planning to take himself off TV for a little while anyway. So we'll see. In the meantime, the whole mess last week with Triple H talking Vince out of getting slapped by John Cena because "nobody should be laying hands on Vince until the Hogan match" ended up being for nothing.
  • Notes from Smackdown: in talking about Stephanie McMahon trying to be a babyface, Dave says she's basically the wrong person for this gimmick but she's a McMahon, so what are ya gonna do? He also jokes that "when this thing goes down and I write the book, I think my title will be "Wrestling Promoters Should Be Banned From Having Children: Unless They Don't Allow Them To Work In Their Promotion." I dunno, seems wordy to me. They also did the bit with Stephanie as GM and all the wrestlers backstage watching on the monitors, leading Dave on a Cornette-style rant about how WWE can't even be bothered to separate heels and faces in different locker rooms and it takes you out of the show when they're all sitting around backstage together watching the TV and carrying on conversations. Sure, kayfabe is already dead, but can we at least try to create an illusion of it within the show itself? This was also the last Smackdown before the PPV and there was some discussion over the finish of the Rock vs. Angle match. Paul Heyman and Michael Hayes wanted Rock to lose clean to the ankle lock, since he was winning the title on Sunday anyway and Angle was doing the job. Pat Patterson and Triple H argued against it, saying Rock shouldn't be tapping to anyone, even though Angle's gimmick right now is that he can make everyone tap (even Hogan last month). So instead, we got the Undertaker run-in DQ finish and Dave says this kinda shit is why WWE is unable to create long-term storylines. There was also a bunch of bickering with Heyman, Triple H and Hayes over the finish of the Jericho/Cena match as well, which Jericho was apparently upset about.
  • In an online chat this week, Goldberg didn't rule out going to WWE but said he hasn't met with anyone in the company. He also said that if WWE had kept Vince Russo, then there's zero chance he would have gone. When asked about Japan, he only said he's considering all offers. Goldberg is said to have no interest in the WWE schedule and is content with the idea of working a few big shows a year in Japan. That's all well and good but Dave says the reality is that the biggest money opportunity for Goldberg is in WWE, where there's several dream matches that would do huge PPV business and earn him far more money than he can ever make in Japan. WWE also gives you the kind of celebrity exposure in America that can open up acting roles. But the problem is, giving Goldberg a reduced schedule could cause some issues in the locker room. Then again, Rock and Hogan are already working reduced schedules.
  • This week's episode of WWE Confidential was the best of the series yet, focusing on the Bischoff and McMahon relationship. It was weird to see these two, out of character, reminiscing about a time when they legitimately would have gladly killed each other. They even showed Bischoff's 1990 WWF audition tape.
  • Various WWF notes: Kevin Nash did an interview and said he has spoken to Steve Austin since the walkout and gave his opinion on why Austin left. "I think Steve was burned out. He's got a broken neck, bad knees and a bad back. I know what it feels like when I wake up every morning. And he's had a couple multi-million years. Maybe it just isn't worth it to him anymore." Bischoff did a radio interview and noted he's been in L.A. constantly pitching TV ideas and said there's no interest in wrestling anywhere in Hollywood right now. Vince and Linda McMahon have purchased a new vacation condo in Boca Raton, FL. It's an 8-bedroom 10,000 sqft. condo on the 7th and 8th floors of the Excelsior hotel. The double-unit condo recently appraised for 14 million.
  • DDP did an interview and admitted that the stalker angle was the most disappointing thing he's ever done in wrestling because he wanted so badly for it to work and it flopped. DDP also said that Steve Austin hasn't called him since he was forced to retire and admitted he was kind of hurt by it. He said he knows Austin is going through a lot right now, but they're friends and if Austin can't take the time to care about what's going on in his life, then he can't be bothered to waste time worrying about whatever Austin is going through either.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: As I mentioned last week, I haven't been able to keep writing these fast enough to keep with the normal M/W/F schedule. After asking last week, Wednesday seemed to be the popular response. So for the remainder of the 2002 Rewinds, they will be posted every Wednesday at/around noon EST. Hopefully I can keep up with a once-a-week schedule at least. And if I can build up enough cushion, I may go back to M/W/F again before we end it. Who knows, I'm playing this shit by ear. ON WITH THE SHOW!

  • WWF's Backlash PPV is in the books and Hulk Hogan's comeback came full circle with him defeating Triple H to win his 6th WWF championship. At 48 years old, Hogan becomes one of the oldest major world champions in wrestling history (Vince McMahon himself is the oldest in WWF, having won the title briefly in 1999 at age 54). Ric Flair was 51 the last time he was WCW champion (back in 2000 when being WCW champion meant less than nothing). AJPW Triple Crown champ Genichiro Tenryu is 52. Lou Thesz was 49 when he last held the NWA title. Terry Funk was ECW champ at 53. Verne Gagne (55) and Nick Bockwinkel (52) were AWA champions at those ages. But that's the league Hogan is in with this win. Anyway, it was obvious the minute Hogan returned to the company that he couldn't be a heel. The fans wouldn't allow it. So they did the babyface turn and have now hot-shotted the title onto him to capitalize on this wave of nostalgia popularity he's riding. Dave expects him to be a short-term champion because obviously, you can't build a company around Hulk Hogan as your top guy in 2002 for any real length of time. That being said, this title victory was a last-minute decision. Up until the day of the show, Triple H was supposed to go over (even though he had been telling people all week that he would gladly do the job for Hogan). On the day of the show, Vince made the call to go with Hogan. Dave is honestly baffled that Vince even had to think about it. Hogan is the hottest star in the business right now. Him winning the title and having a short run is obviously the right decision.
  • Long obituary for Wahoo McDaniel, who passed away this week at age 63 from diabetes complications and renal failure. One of the biggest stars of his era, Wahoo was a headliner for more than 25 years everywhere he went. Dave notes that despite his gimmick, Wahoo was only 1/18th Native American, but it was something he took seriously. Prior to his wrestling career, he was a star football player in the AFL for the Houston Oilers, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and Miami Dolphins. He was later traded to the San Diego Chargers, but retired from football to pursue wrestling without playing a game for them (back in those days, he could make more money wrestling). A life of hard partying led to a lot of health problems in the last few years and he died broke. For the last few years, he lived off the tiny pension he got from his football career and often had to borrow money from friends in the business, and continued wrestling at tiny indie shows to make money until 1996 when health issues forced him to retire. Dave recaps some of his career highlights but promises a much longer and more detailed story on Wahoo next week. Oh goodie.
  • To nobody's surprise, The Scorpion King set box office records this week, becoming the biggest April opening weekend ever, grossing $36.2 million in the first three days and breaking the record set by The Matrix back in 1999. Starting to look like this Rock kid might have a future in the talkies. With a budget of $60 million, this movie is expected be a major financial success and turn Rock one of the biggest money stars in Hollywood. Because of the success of this movie, it's being reported that Rock will earn $10 million for his next film Helldorado (later renamed The Rundown). Critically, the film got mixed reviews but word of mouth has been strong and Dave expects it to remain #1 next week also (yup). So what does this mean for wrestling? Well, he's probably not going to be around much anymore, but that's actually not a bad thing for WWF. Because they own the name "The Rock" and have him signed to a contract, they're going to get those producer credits on his movies and get a percentage of the money. In fact, WWF will make more money off Rock being in movies than they would having him working house shows 4 days a week like everyone else. Either way, his full-time career in the ring is almost surely coming to an end, but he's still expected to work PPVs regularly, and with his growing star power, that could generate even more money if he can translate that into buyrates. But then there's another problem: as Rock becomes a more bankable movie star, those movie studios aren't going to be happy with him wrestling and risking injuries that could derail production on these multi-million dollar films (exactly what ended up happening years later when Rock got injured in the 2nd Cena match and delayed production of Hercules). Dave says that several years ago, Bruiser Brody was in negotiations for the role as the lead villain in the movie Over The Top but the studio insisted that he stop wrestling for months while they were filming and Brody wouldn't go for it. But that was also a low-budget movie and Brody probably stood to make more in wrestling than he did doing the movie. Rock's situation is obviously different, with much higher budget movies and waaaaay more money to be made. But on the same hand, working a major PPV main event can also earn Rock a pretty nice pay day as well, so he's gonna have some decisions to make. But no matter how you slice it, Rock's days as a full-time wrestler are probably over.
  • Oh yeah, the Backlash PPV. I guess Dave just remembered too. Other notes from the show: Dave compares it to a WCW PPV from the good days. Lots of good undercard matches, a couple of stinkers, and major stars in passable main event matches. Despite Hogan's surging popularity, the show only drew a little over 12,000, which was nowhere near a sellout and they had to block a lot of seats off for the cameras. But Dave doesn't blame Hogan for that, he blames the sorry state of the company lately. Also, the show was in the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, where Owen Hart died and the city has never really recovered from that. All wrestling shows in that building since Owen's death haven't drawn well. Kidman vs. Tajiri and Angle vs. Edge were the show-stealers. Scott Hall vs. Bradshaw was a horrible match, due entirely to Hall, and was so bad that Jim Ross even broke out his old "bowling shoe ugly" description, which is JR code for "holy shit, this match sucks." Dave hints that the usual Scott Hall reasons are to blame (indeed, Hall is about a week away from getting fired yet again). Brock Lesnar beat Jeff Hardy by referee stoppage and Dave thinks Lesnar looked kinda green and had to sell way too much for a guy they're pushing as a monster. Eddie Guerrero won the IC title from RVD, who worked with a bum knee and didn't look all that great. But Guerrero looked outstanding and worked his ass off. Undertaker beat Steve Austin with special guest referee Ric Flair accidentally costing Austin the match to further that feud. And of course, Hogan beat Triple H in a bad match that didn't have even a fraction of the heat that Hogan/Rock had last month. Undertaker interfered, which likely sets up a Hogan/Taker feud.
  • Vince McMahon did another interview a couple weeks ago while he was in Australia that was interesting. For starters, he actually acknowledged the WWA promotion, saying, "I think they're just trying to beat us to where we should have been all along. To be the first in and grab some of that, which is all right." (I guess that's in reference to the Australian market?) Also, Vince said he thinks he's just about done as a TV character who works matches (not quite, ol' man). He also admitted that the wrestling business has been weakened by no longer having any competition: "We are our own competition now. It's not anything we aspired to be. I think competition, generally speaking, is very good--if it's good competition. We always thought there'd be WCW, and I hoped that ECW would continue and, quite frankly, I was supporting financially the ECW organization to a certain extent. No one ever knew, and of course, Paul Heyman would cut his anti-WWF promos so everyone knew the WWF wasn't supporting it." Indeed, that is true. In ECW's bankruptcy filings, it was revealed that they owed the WWF more than half a million dollars in loans.
  • Dave has sketchy reports that Invader 1, better known as Jose Gonzalez, and even more better known as the guy who murdered Bruiser Brody and got away with it, has quit the WWC in Puerto Rico, after more than 20 years as one of their top stars (second only to Carlos Colon). The story going around is that there was some disagreement over the booking of Carlos' son Carly Colon (better known to us as Carlito). There's a perception in Puerto Rico that Carly doesn't have a lot of charisma and is only being pushed as such a big star because he's Carlos Colon's son and apparently the issues were serious enough that Gonzalez was removed from the booking team. When he was told, he quit the promotion entirely. For what it's worth, this could also be an angle, Dave admits he isn't entirely sure (best I can tell, not an angle. Gonzalez ends up wrestling in IWA for a couple of years, WWC's biggest competition, but he eventually returns).
  • Toshiaki Kawada underwent reconstructive knee surgery this week and the prognosis is that he won't be back until spring 2003. So for the next year, Keiju Muto and Genichiro Tenryu are going to have to carry the load for AJPW.
  • Speaking of AJPW, the attendance for the Champion Carnival tournament this year was a whopping 49.4% higher than last year, which shows just how important Muto, Satoshi Kojima, and Kendo Kashin have been for business since they jumped ship from NJPW.
  • Shinya Hashimoto & Naoya Ogawa vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Scott Norton has been added to NJPW's big Tokyo Dome show next week. The show is going to be headlined by a Misawa vs. Chono dream match, but because of the issue with the TV networks, that match won't be allowed to air on TV. So they added this tag match to try to drum up some TV ratings, because Ogawa is a proven huge ratings draw. The media is trying to push Hashimoto and Ogawa as a modern day Inoki/Baba-type of tag team, since they have such a well known history together as opponents. Also, as has been mentioned in the past, there's some people who don't particularly want Hashimoto or Ogawa on the card, but Inoki pretty much always gets his way. Elsewhere on the show, Giant Singh is facing Giant Silva in a big battle of the giants match. The plan as of now is to have Chyna as the special referee of that match, which Dave predicts will be one of the worst matches of all time.
  • NJPW's hottest young star Hiroshi Tanahashi suffered an apparent broken foot and will be out for a few months, which is a pretty big blow for the company. This means he's off the Tokyo Dome show, where he and Kensuke Sasaki were scheduled to face the Steiner Brothers (Dave must have gotten some bad info here, because Tanahashi does indeed work the Tokyo Dome match and, in fact, never really took any time off at all around this period. Also, this is the match Chyna ended up refereeing because the Singh/Silva match doesn't end up happening).
  • Remember the book that was being written about Stu Hart? Well, the big release party for the book took place with an event at the Hart house in Calgary. Much of the family was there, along with the media, some local politicians, and wrestlers like Davey Boy Smith and Jim Neidhart. Dave doesn't know for sure which siblings were and weren't there but he knows Bret wasn't there. Bret wrote a column in the Calgary Sun this week saying he loved the first 2/3 of the book focusing on Stu's life and career, but he hated the last part of the book which covered the downfall of the family over the last several years. Bret was careful not to trash the author because he believes she tried to tell an honest story. But he said she only got one side of the story on why the family has fallen apart. Bret admitted that the author did reach out to him but said he turned it down because his mother Helen had also turned her down and he wasn't going to go against one of his mother's final decisions. So if she wasn't gonna do it, neither was Bret. But the other siblings didn't feel the same, and, well, there ya go.
  • Update on Goldberg's latest car-punching related injury: broken ulna bone in his left arm. He's got a cast going from his shoulder all the way to his wrist that he has to wear for 6-8 weeks. For those keeping track, Goldberg is now 0-2 against automobiles, having sliced the shit out of his right arm in 1999 punching a limo window on live TV in WCW.
  • Lou Thesz is still in the hospital and is progressing very slowly, but the prognosis is still good (sadly, no. Obituary Pt. 1 next week).
  • Lots of wrestling competition in Philadelphia these days. Ring of Honor has a show scheduled there in June and is kicking off a tournament to crown their first ever world champion. Just a couple days later and a couple blocks away, a new promotion called Major League Wrestling, promoted by Court Bauer, has booked the ECW Arena for its debut show (and here we are in 2020 and both companies are still alive. Although, to be fair, MLW closed down for, like, 13 years in between that time and then re-opened. But whatever!)
  • There will no longer be a Brian Pillman memorial show taking place this year, as has been done for the last 4 years. There's a few reasons, including Les Thatcher being too busy running WWF developmental and just having trouble pulling it all together. But a big reason was due to last year's show, when Pillman's former wife Melanie showed up with her new husband, which apparently made a lot of wrestlers kind of uncomfortable. Over the years, the shows raised $115,000 for Melanie and Dave also hints that there's more to this story that isn't exactly pleasant, but he doesn't elaborate (I assume this is in reference to all the stuff we've heard in years since about how Melanie was an addict that neglected her kids and blew all the money on drugs).
  • Remember the story about XPW promoter Rob Black claiming to have had a stroke? Well they did an angle at the latest show where he came out in a wheelchair, selling the stroke and acting like Larry Flynt. Dave says this would probably win "Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic" in the Observer Awards this year, except this is XPW and this sort of dumb shit is expected from them so no one cares enough to be disgusted.
  • Dave is now grouping the WWA news and the news on the Jerry Jarrett promotion into the same section now, since the plan is for them all to work together. WWA will not run any PPVs in the U.S. for the time being, so as to not compete with Jarrett (also, let's be real, because their last PPV was a financial disaster).
  • Dave has heard "from so many different sources" that Jeff Jarrett is pushing hard for Vince Russo to write TV for this new promotion. Russo hasn't agreed yet, but he and Jeff are close, although there are questions about how Russo and Jerry Jarrett might co-exist given their wildly different philosophies on what wrestling should be. All of the main people involved in starting this promotion have signed confidentiality agreements, so nobody is saying much about what the plans are. But there have been some things. Word is the smaller wrestlers will be kept separate from the larger wrestlers and pushed as their own division, which may be called middleweight rather than cruiserweight (or how about X-Division? Just a thought).
  • The negotiations for Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock for UFC's Sept. PPV are actually pretty serious, to Dave's surprise. It would be Shamrock's first UFC fight in 6 years. The major hold up is that Shamrock won't sign an exclusive deal and he wants a no-rematch clause in the contract. Ortiz is the UFC's biggest star and if he loses, UFC wants to protect itself and make sure they can bring Shamrock back for a big rematch. They don't want to risk him beating Ortiz and then jumping to PRIDE. So if this Shamrock fight doesn't happen, the backup plan is Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell at the Sept. PPV. Dave thinks that would be a tougher fight for Ortiz anyway, although it wouldn't have near the drawing power.
  • Notes from Raw: Triple H, fresh off losing his title at Backlash, ran out to attack Undertaker. Please note that it was made explicitly clear a few weeks ago that whenever Triple H lost the title, he would become an exclusive Smackdown star. So it only took 4 weeks into the brand split for them to screw it all up and have Triple H run in and attack someone on Raw. Big Show teamed with Austin to face Hall & X-Pac but Show turned on Austin to join the NWO. With Kevin Nash out for the next little while from bicep surgery, the decision was made to add Big Show because he has history with the group in WCW.
  • DDP has some back problems that may be career-threatening. He has bone spurs on both sides of his spine and was in terrible pain at the Smackdown tapings when he wrestled Bob Holly. The next day, he went to see a doctor who told him in no uncertain terms to retire. DDP then went to Birmingham for a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews office and was told to do a couple weeks of physical therapy and if that doesn't help, he may need back surgery that could be career-ending. So that's where he stands right now (indeed, that match with Bob Holly ends up being DDP's final WWF match during that run. In fact, it was his last match at all for 2 years. He eventually came back, did some indies, made some special WWE appearances, worked a few matches in TNA, etc. But unbeknownst to anyone at the time, that Bob Holly match was the end of his career as a full-time wrestler. And, of course, that back injury is what led to the creation of DDP Yoga).
  • Lita's injury while filming the TV show Dark Angel was worse than thought. She herniated a disc and had several cracks in her vertebrae when she went to the hospital. She's going to get surgery this week and will likely be out anywhere from 6-9 months (ends up being out of the ring for almost a year and a half). The injury occurred when she was rehearsing a fight scene with a stunt double. Even after the injury, Lita went ahead and filmed her scenes for the show, although she was said to be in noticeable pain.
  • WWF has had negotiations with Goldberg regarding buying out his Turner contract and signing him, but Dave doesn't know how serious they are. The two sides have talked off and on for the past year, but so far, WWF hasn't come through with enough money to convince him to do it. Dave mentions that before the NWO signed, Hogan was negotiating with WWF and was pushing to bring himself and Goldberg in together at the same time instead of Hall and Nash, but that obviously didn't happen for the same reason (WWF didn't wanna pay Goldberg what he was asking). Anyway, we're still about a year away from that happening.
  • Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban (who Dave says is a wrestling fan) did a cameo in OVW with Kenny Bolin and Prototype (this is great and I can't believe I've never seen it before).
WATCH: Mark Cuban in OVW with Prototype (John Cena)
  • During a recent interview, Rock mentioned that he has received some jealousy from people in the WWF locker room over his movie career, and in particular singled out a "top" wrestler he felt was going behind his back sometimes to try to hurt his career. Although Rock didn't name names, several sources have confirmed to Dave that he was referring to Triple H, who he's sometimes had a shaky relationship with. In the same interview, he said it's hard to keep friends in the wrestling business but named Jericho and Austin as two people he considers to be close friends.
  • Dave recaps the latest episode of Tough Enough, which was pretty much built around Jackie Gayda (one of the eventual winners) cheating on her boyfriend with fellow contestant Pete in the hot tub and then getting dumped by her boyfriend over the phone after she sorta confessed to it (though even in her confession, she still lied and didn't come close to fully admitting everything she did, much of which was shown on camera). Full blown soap opera drama. They eventually got back together, but Dave thinks Jackie's boyfriend probably wasn't too thrilled when he saw this episode and suspects they're probably broken up again now.
  • Random notes: MTV's show The Osbournes did a big 5.2 rating this week, becoming the first weekly TV series on cable to beat Raw in a long time. Chris Benoit is taking harder and harder bumps in preparation for his comeback, probably in the next 4-6 weeks. He may end up being paired with Arn Anderson as his manager and may end up on Raw even though he was originally drafted to Smackdown. Rock's second time hosting SNL is believed to have been the highest rated episode this season. Hogan is claiming that one of his ribs is broken but he's working through it because he's champion now.
  • The brand split has led to some benefits for the wrestlers. TV tapings are usually long, hard days. But now everyone is only doing 1 TV taping per week instead of two, so that's one less grind of a day. Plus there's minor things like less cramped dressing rooms and shorter lines at catering. Not really a big deal, but when you've been traveling all day, anything that makes life a tiny bit easier is nice.
  • After Raw in St. Louis, they tested the waters for a Hogan vs. Austin feud. After the show went off the air, Austin was getting beat down by Big Show, X-Pac, and Hall. Hogan did a run-in to save him and they cleared the ring together. Afterward, Austin hit Hogan with a stunner and drank beer. The stunner got a mixed response from the crowd since both guys are hugely popular right now. After the stunner, Hogan recovered and got back in Austin's face again and they did a stare down. But then Austin ended up showing respect and they drank beer together to send the fans home happy. Hogan even did a leg drop on a beer can. (Sounds like the mixed reaction may have caused them to second guess this? Anyway, here's two videos. The first is a 4 second clip of Austin giving Hogan this stunner, which is the only time that ever happened and the footage is rare. And the second is after Hogan got up, the beer bash celebration afterward).
WATCH: Austin stuns Hogan

  • Paul Bearer recently wrote an article on WWF.com out of character where he discussed his wife's battle with cancer. Dave notes that even though Bearer hasn't been on the road for a long time, WWF recently renewed his contract for another year anyway. Dave gives Vince credit here and says that there are a lot of things, both good and bad, you can say about Vince McMahon, but when it comes to situations like this, he has always gone above and beyond to take care of his employees in a way that most other bosses (especially wrestling promoters) would never do, and he deserves praise for that.
  • Scotty 2 Hotty has had some neck issues for awhile and he's been saying that eventually, it will force him to retire. Well, he was taken off the road this week and has surgery scheduled for next week. He has damage to more of the vertebrae in his neck than Austin, Benoit, or Rhyno had so even after the surgery, there's no guarantee he'll be able to return (he was out for a year and a half but eventually returned in Oct. 2003).
  • The company is making a conscious effort not to rush too many new stars on TV at once, so that everyone has time to shine and don't get lost in the shuffle. Brock Lesnar was the first one up, debuting the night after Wrestlemania. And from spoilers Dave has for the upcoming Smackdown, Randy Orton will be next up, debuting this week.
  • Rock was scheduled to be on the cover of this week's new issue of Rolling Stone but he got pulled at the last minute. The day-to-day operations of the magazine was just taken over by Jann Wenner, the CEO of Wenner Media, and he was upset of the direction the magazine has taken. One of the first decisions he made was taking Rock off the cover and replacing him with the Osbournes, feeling like that was a better cover story and is what their readers would be more interested in.
  • Larry Zbyszko has filed 3 separate lawsuits, one each against Vince McMahon, WWF, and Chris Jericho, over the use of the term "Living Legend" when describing Jericho. Apparently, Zbyszko has the term trademarked for wrestling use and he sent WWF a cease & desist letter about it several weeks ago. WWF ignored the letter and kept using the phrase on TV. It's funny because back in the 80s, WWF actually trademarked that term for Bruno Sammartino to use. When Sammartino quit the company in 1988, Linda McMahon told him he could no longer use that nickname. Sammartino pretty much ignored her and kept doing it and WWF never bothered to try to sue him or anything over it. And I guess at some point, the trademark lapsed and Zybszko snatched it up.
  • The wrestlers attending WWF's latest try-out camp this week are Josh Matthews (who cancelled his XWF bookings to be there), a Canadian wrestler named Bobby Rude, and a couple of other names you've never heard of that never became anybody.
  • Remember the story a couple of weeks ago about Vince McMahon trying to get an exclusivity deal on the Molson Center arena in Montreal when he found out Bret Hart was going to appear at Jacques Rougeau's next show there? At the time, it was reported Vince's effort failed. Turns out....it didn't! The Molson Center originally refused, but WWF raised their offer and paid out the ass for it and then Molson Center agreed. So WWF now has exclusivity there. The arena then went back to Rougeau and told him he could still do his show, but he would have to put up a $150,000 advance first, which needless to say, he can't afford to do. Last year, Rougeau drew nearly 10,000 people to that arena for a show but this year, he's having to find a new building now. Vince strikes again!
